Hospital visiting hours

Does this include one person with the patient as a next of kin sort of status? My dp has just been admitted into hospital and i went as soon as i finished work, and have stayed here while hes sleeping. Its nice to be with him and he likes knowing theres someone with him.

Nurse just popped in and said that they actually have visiting hours, and that they finished at 4. Shes been ok, said im ok to stay till next visiting at 6-7 and pulled the door closed.

I gebuinely hadnt realised that i wouldn't be allowed to stay with him? Are people in hopsital actually meant to lie in a bed for 22 hours on their own until visitors are allowed in? Its not like im making a lot of noise and its a private room so not disturbing anyone else.

Ours has different visiting times depending on the wards. Some are 6.30-8 and some have afternoon could visiting 2-4 as well. You are not normally allowed to stay all day unless it's intensive care.

The difficult thing would then be about how busy the ward would be if everyone had visitors with them all the time it would become a bit crowded! From my experience intensive care wards can sometimes allow 24hr visiting but it's unfortunately not feasible for every ward.

That's normal. As pp said only situations like intensive care let you stay all day.

You might not think you're in the way, but when theyre doing rounds and so on you can be without realising.

Our hospital means that you can only visit in visiting hours. So even one person isn’t allowed to stay all the time.

So generally afternoon, then a break which is meant to be for patient meal time and drugs round then evening visiting. Morning is visitor free for doctors rounds, getting patients up, etc.

Ask the shift coordinator or ward sister if an allowance can be made as he’s in a private room. Point out you work during the day so can’t make afternoon visiting.

Ours is 1.30 till 8.
They don't like you being there at dinner times.
When my mum was in we were allowed to stay with her 24hrs.
She had dementia and was very confused. The nurse's were busy and asked if someone could stay with her.

Most wards have limited visiting hours to allow patients to rest properly and to allow the nurses to care for the patients unimpeded by visitors. Exceptions are made sometimes but it's at the discretion of the nursing staff.

Yes because they're there to rest and get well, most people will not find a bit of time to themselves a massive hardship. They are allowed to read or look at their phones etc. It's not like they're forced to just lie there in silence.

Feel mortified that i didn't realise this! For some reason i thought that one person was ok, but it makes sense that of course that not ok, and theres sound logic behind limiting visits, no matter how close you are to the person.

Luckily the nurses were nice about it, im home now, and will follow the rules tomorrow!
