Baby Shower etiquette

I have been invited to a Baby Shower for my DH's niece (her first Baby). I have never been to one before so am really in the Dark about usual procedure!

Is it customary to bring a present, if so is it a jokey present or the kind of gift you would buy for a new Baby? Also, it's afternoon tea in a naice hotel, so is it a bit of a dressy thing?

Apologies for the daftness, this has never been on my radar before ConfusedBlushGrin

Gifts are expected y and would be the kind of gift you would give to a new baby. Format seems to be nibbles, tea (possibly booze for non-pregnant folks), games and general female chit chat. I would say 2-3 hours long, but they are becoming terribly American-ised (like proms!) and can now be massive spectacles.

Mine was 12 years ago and was in the Livingroom with tea, sausage rolls and a couple of cheap balloons littering the floor. But I've seen people renting posh venues with massive cakes and balloon arches etc. Insanity!

I typically take a gift for the mother rather than the baby ( I would save that for afterwards) - a lovely body butter, or voucher for pedicure, or a lavender pillow, for example.

I usually take some Neal’s Yard goodies for the mum to be and a jelly cat teddy for the baby’s nursery.
Fairly standard but nice enough.
