Cat yowling

My cat is 18 years old in May, and has recently started making the most appalling, loud yowling noise, and we don't know why. Any time of night or day. He eats well, goes outside to poo, occasionally sprays indoors.

Any ideas?

Our 18 year old cat did exactly the same!

We discovered that he had become completely deaf, and this loud, alarming yowling is an indicator.

Like yours, ours was fine in every other respect. Try making a noise near him and see if he reacts.

Do some googling as well.

Bonus - not bothered by hoover or fireworks,

It could also be a sign of pain - my cat has recently done similar. Turn out to be an inflamed bladder/cystitis

I had two older cats - only one now - and they both started yowling like that. The older one, who was 18, was very clingy too. When I mentioned it to the vet he said often it was old age (he actually said it's like when some older people get very fussy and anxious!)

The younger cat still yowls and it can get beyond tedious. Handily he's also quite deaf so can't hear me telling him to STFU. Wink

Yes,inotterNews, getting a check up with the vet is a very good suggestion. Just because ours was deaf doesn't mean It is always the reason for yowling.

My old girl started doing that a few years ago and It turned out she had hyperthyroidism and kidney issues (infact one kidney had died off!) and has since developed something with her liver or bowel. and in the last 6 months is having a painkiller for arthritis in her spine, I'm glad I took her as getting her treatment has given me probably an extra 2 years with her. she had some periods of serious crisis but we have got into a settled groove now.

she is very clingy and yowly now and will follow me screaming everytime i move (if shes awake) she even carries on with the yowls as i stroke her looking at me all wide eyed, like she cant break the feeling for a few seconds.

it all sounds terrible but its not, she i and the vet are all on top of making a nice elderly life for her and while she is ill she seems happy enough even if things arnt quite perfect.

I should mention her hearing and eyesight are old like her but fine.

My elderly male cat yowls ,his female litter mate doesn't .
He's not deaf .I don't think he's in pain ,we're often at vets with him for poor kidney function .

One of the times he yowls is when he's just done a poo in the litter tray ,but it's mainly when he can't see us .

Our elderly cocker makes perculiar noises and wanders around, though very agile and good apetite, enjoys walks and fuss etc. Likewise the VET said it was old age, poss a sort of dementia thing where they find this comforting!

My 21 yo has been yowling for about 3 years now. Only at night when she thinks she's been abandoned. Love her to bits but it's driving us all mad because it's SO loud. Vet checked and said she's fine but bit deaf and probably got some form of dementia so doesn't remember what's going on. I rarely sleep all night now 😢. We had to lock her in the utility room with her basket, food and litter tray at night as its just ridiculous at night. She's perfectly happy all day.

My yowling cat had feline dementia

My 17 year old cat has started to do this in the last few months. As far as I know he’s not in any pain, he seems fine in all other respects, not deaf. He only does it at certain times (mainly in the middle of the night 😤) and he usually only does it in certain areas of the house. I assumed it’s due to some sort of mental deterioration 😢

My 18 yo male cat does this too and has done for a few years now. We have taken him to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong. He does it a lot about feeding time until he is fed even though he has a constant supply of biscuits.
