School run snacks

When I pick my DC up from school they are always ravenous. What snacks do you give your kids immediately on pick up? I can't seem to get myself organised enough to have a steady supply of healthy snacks so often resort to chewy bars/crisps...need some inspiration!

Fruit. Apple or banana. Unless you're going to say you have a three hour commute home, that should suffice for the short journey home.

Gruffalosandbuffalos · 15/01/2020 08:23

Surely it depends on where you are going next? Short ten minute walk home I would make them wait, straight out to a swim lesson etc when probably a sandwich or something more fulfilling.

Littleshortcake · 15/01/2020 08:23

A banana is filling and convenient.

When they get home they can get some fruit.

BlackInk · 15/01/2020 10:05

Unless your journey home is over half an hour or you're going straight out somewhere (shopping, swimming lessons, etc.) I really don't think it's necessary to post food into children the second they come out of school. Surely they can wait til they get home if they're hungry?

My DC come out of school at 3.15 and eat dinner at about half 5 or 6. They usually finish bits from their lunchboxes or have a piece of fruit when they get home. Sometimes a biscuit or something if we've got friends round.

One DC is chubby, one is slender. Neither of them are starved.

SallyWD · 15/01/2020 10:10

We live 5 mins from school so they wait until they get home I let them have ONE snack and then nothing until they have an early dinner around 4.30pm (as they're so hungry). They often get a hot chocolate and biscuit straight after school. Not the healthiest snack I know but I make sure dinner and dessert is healthy. If they want more snacks after dinner it has to be something healthy like fruit or nuts.

winesolveseverything · 15/01/2020 10:11

My 5 year old comes out absolutely ravenous.. I'm not sure the portion sizes at lunch are very big for the little ones.. He comes out at 3:15, but we then have to drive to his brothers school and wait so we don't get home until just before 4.

I take a brioche and apple for him. Or some cheese, crackers and grapes. On the day he goes straight to swimming lesson he has a wrap and Barney bear cake or something to keep him going.

BrokenWing · 15/01/2020 10:16

Made me think of this 🤣

Mine always waited until they got home. If your journey is long then a banana or apple or mars bar

KittenVsBox · 15/01/2020 10:25

Mine wait til we've walked home, but fruit or cheese (and crackers, but not if you are taking them to school!)

Drizzzle · 15/01/2020 10:26

"Full of Cadbury goodness", not sure you could say that ina chocolate advert these days!

OP: bananas or a cheese sandwich

Chocolateandcarbs · 15/01/2020 10:33

School run is 40mins for us, so my son gets a drink, some strawberries/grapes or a banana and i keep a box of homemade flapjacks and breadsticks in the car in case that’s not sufficient (this is on top of a hot lunch and porridge for breakfast). He just needs it right now (probably growing) and he is a thin child. I envy his metabolism!

Kittykatmacbill · 15/01/2020 11:26

Mine have to wait until they get home from the park as otherwise they would never leave. But they do have oatcakes apple and cheese for snack when we get in.

On days we got straight from school somewhere they generally get oatcakes.

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/01/2020 11:28

Im agreeing with banana. quick easy and healthy

Urkiddingright · 15/01/2020 11:34

It’s a 35 min walk to my DC’s school so if we’re walking it (which I like to do when the weather is nice on my days off work) I take them fruit, a yogurt, maybe rice cakes or popcorn, an oat bar etc.

Footiefan2019 · 15/01/2020 11:46

An apple, a nature valley bar thing, or homemade flapjack, maybe a packet of aldi’s own Pom bears, fruit bear snack thing, small box of raisins . One or two of the above that’s what I normally have in the cupboard. Kids are petite / skinny, ok eaters, extremely active (hobbies 4 out of 5 nights).

Looneytune253 · 15/01/2020 11:48

Tbh NOTHING. They can wait till they get home. I've never been one for encouraging constant grazers. If you don't have anything with you they will get used to that. We have a small snack when we get home then we have our evening meal about 6pm

BrokenWing · 15/01/2020 14:49

and very small and neat

It is huge compared to today's finger of fudge!

KatyN · 15/01/2020 16:27

Mine get a packet of crisps and a pain au chocolate or something similar. Homemade snacks aren’t practical and a carrot stick wouldn’t fill them up.
They are hungry. I don’t relish making hungry children do anything.

Occasionally a 150ml can of coke to stave of an autistic meltdown if it's clear that DS is brewing and struggling to control himself for that last 5 minutes along a busy, noisy pavement. The sugar hit and hydration help keep him going so that he can walk safely home and get into a safe, quiet space and it gives him another focus instead of releasing all his frustration in the street.

Usually we can wait until we get home... but not always.

DrCoconut · 15/01/2020 19:58

Shiny, I'm interested to read about a sugar hit fending off a meltdown. My oldest son's behaviour deteriorated hugely if he didn't eat regularly and he had big food issues so it was tricky. My middle son also needs to be kept fed and hydrated or he slides into the meltdown abyss. Both autistic, oldest is 22 now.

morrisseysquif · 15/01/2020 20:09

Breadsticks, a small piece of bagel.
