Should I apply for a job even though I know I won't get it?

Not to be too outing, I've applied for several roles in my current place of work. Permanent and temporary. I didn't get any of them. My CV is great, I interview well and my feedback is alway great but...My face doesn't fit. I have caused trouble for two of my previous line managers which has, in turn, caused trouble for their line managers. I've always been right but it's not made me popular. To cut a long story short, another job has come up. I know I won't get it as there is someone else applying who is more experienced but I'm a better fit for the job. I don't want to put myself through it. But it's the role I've been applying for elsewhere. The process is full on and will cost me a huge amount of time and energy I can ill afford at the moment. But... if I don't go for it I'll kick myself. If I go for it and don't get it I'll feel utterly humiliated again. WWYD?

Well you most certainly won't get it if you don't apply.

That is correct. I'm just tired of setting myself up to fail just in the off chance that this time will be different. I was told by a senior manager I'll never get promoted there (in a car park- he later denied it), so I know it's pointless. But do I do it not to let them defeat me, and to get more interview experience? Or just not waste my time- I'm super busy as it is.

Can you change companies? It sounds like you're just going to get a lot of heart ache where you are.

I've been trying- jobs in my files are few and far between unfortunately- which makes this all the more frustrating!

I would apply, interview practice and all that but also shows resilience and ambition.

I think you should definitely go for it! Just keep trying and life will give you that break eventually! Your company does sound like it has a fair few cunts sadly but don’t let them put you down.

If it is what you have been applying for elsewhere, then go for it!

It will not be wasted - it will just help you when The One comes up.

If there were a reasonable number of alternative jobs you could apply for then I wouldn’t, but in the circumstances then I would. On the face of it!

The car park conversation is the bit that makes me think, though - if they would definitely never promote you then there really is no point. Is the person who said that going to be doing the interviews?

Thanks all. I've lost my confidence a bit recently too. I'm used to setting goals and working hard and achieving them. Getting all the knock backs is tough. I've never been in a position where people have put their personal feelings before my ability to do the job. Feels pretty shit.

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar yes he is. I complained about him for saying it. He denied it. I didn't get the last job that he interviewed me for because he queried one of my answers. The other panel members disagreed with him but it went to Another candidate because they didn't have any concerns raised even though their interview wasn't as good. Call me paranoid...
