Baby's first vaccinations in the morning

I'm absolutely dreading it, I actually feel sick. He's sleeping so peacefully just now and I know it's going to make him cry and probably give him a fever as a minimum. I'm expecting to have a horribly upset baby for the next few days and my heart is breaking for him. I wish I could somehow take them instead.

How quickly should he be ok again?

You’ll be fine! (Even if you cry...like a lot of parents do). Afterwards home for a cup of tea, slice of cake and cuddles on the sofa. 9:20 is good - then you aren’t worrying all morning. Do give the second dose of calpol regardless if your baby seems to need it. Easier to give when your baby is calm (from bitter experience). Cuddle your baby tightly in to you when they have the injections. And make sure your baby has easily accessible legs for the injections.

Thank you @DownWhichOfLate I've already picked out a wee onesie for him. It unbuttons all the way to his foot so easy to get his legs out. I really didn't think I'd feel like this, I'm so practical normally when it comes to healthcare and obviously know the pros outweigh the cons but I wish with all my heart I didn't have to go.

Nobody enjoys this aspect of parenting it is tough.

I had the "advantage" that dd had been in scbu when born so I'd had to get over the instinct to "protect" her from pain inflicted to help her.

Not easy.

But you just kinda have to get on with it.

Hope it goes as well as possible for you all tomorrow. My ex couldn't do it, couldn't stay in the room.

Had my PFB at the surgery today for his 8 week jabs. As with PP however, this wasn't his first rodeo (developed high fever at 4 weeks and had to have bloods and a lumbar puncture) which probably made it easier.
He cried for a few seconds after the jabs in the legs (I didnt realise it was 3!) and then settled.
I gave him Calpol in the nurse's room and then 4 and 8 hours later. Its currently about 10 hours later and he does have a fever of 38°c :( so letting him sleep on me. He's also been fussy and crying for the last few hours bless him.
Still... infinitely better than contracting any of the things we vaccinate against!

He's just sleeping now. I only cried a little bit. He seemed less impressed with the calpol to be honest. We're just having some cuddles. Thanks everyone.

Both of mine cried briefly after the jab, but were perfectly well afterwards. My daughter slept all afternoon. If you breastfeed, give a feed straight after the jab if they're crying and it will settle them down.

DownWhichOfLate · 15/01/2020 12:08

Well done! Yes, giving the calpol is hard work. Enjoy the cuddles!

Tallilah · 15/01/2020 13:08

Glad it went well. My baby has his year ones next week and I remember thinking thank gods it ages to the next ones !

That said cried for 2 mins after a that was it !

I happened to go for a walk through a Victorian cemetery not long after my DD having her first jabs. Seeing all the gravestones of the dead pre-vaccination babies made me feel a lot better about it all!

Ishotmrburns · 15/01/2020 13:21

My DD was very upset in the moment, but was totally over it within 5 minutes. This was the case for every set of vaccinations.

Graphista · 15/01/2020 20:57

So glad it went well you feeling a bit more relaxed about next time now too?
