Yoga...I just don't get it

I've been trying to do RED January and have tried a couple of yoga videos. But I just find it deadly dull. I can see the benefit of it, but god it's boring.

Is it me? Is there a way to liven it up?

Sorry meant to say... People talking about feeling inflexible... There's a saying:

Saying you are too inflexible to do yoga is like saying you're too dirty for a bath.

My mums studio has tons of people who can't sit crossed legged... It takes time and patience but slowly it comes. We always say they get the yoga bug! It's not a quick win type of exercise it can take months for your heels to lower half an inch in down dog.

I love yoga but I found it makes me feel light headed and sick.... anyone know why??

doadeer · 15/01/2020 18:27

@monstermissy

Could be a few reasons - because of the focus on breath in yoga you can feel light headed because you are breathing so deeply.
Or could be dehydrated
Or could be you just getting used to your head being inverted in many poses.

If you feel light headed I'd take child's pose and just give yourself a minute

I'm also doing C25K and thought I'd try something completely different on my rest days. I think I just like music too much - the videos I've tried don't have any.

Running and yoga are totally different things. Yoga is very complementary to running which causes tight hamstrings and achillies. A mix of cardio, strength, balance, flexibility is the best type of exercise programme. As we get older one thing a lot of us struggle with is balance and yoga is fab for this

CurlsandCurves · 16/01/2020 20:54

@SixYears I’m 16 stone and a size 20 and I can do yoga. Yes there are certain positions I can’t get into as well as other people but that goes for pretty much every person in my class. We are all different ages, sizes, and experience.

I find that and Pilates a really good balance to the Clubbercize and dance fitness classes I do, they compliment each other really well.

I’m only 4 months into my yoga and Pilates experience but it’s been incredible. I feel fitter, stronger, more flexible and I love how I can literally feel the improvement week by week.

Its so interesting hearing everyone's views about yoga, I could never get on board with it so instead got an online personal trainer. She is great and has really helped me, would definitely recommend her if anyone is thinking of going that route!

KellyHall · 16/01/2020 21:15

I don't find it boring as I'm concentrating on making sure my breath is correct in line with the poses (you should be inhaling and certain parts and exhaling at others) and each part of my body is exactly where it should be.

It doesn't need to take a long time, I have a toddler and two jobs so I just fit the odd pose/posture in where I can. Most take around 6 breaths. That's not really long enough to get bored. Especially as most of my yoga now involves either helping my toddler who is trying to copy me or trying not to fall over while she climbs on me - it's generally me doing a Tree with dd being a little monkey swinging on said tree!

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 16/01/2020 21:17

I've tried so many classes.

I just can't get it either.

Exercise for me means getting sweaty and out of breath.

Maybe I'm not doing it right but I just can't relax in the classes.

KellyHall · 16/01/2020 23:02

No, you're not doing it right! ;)

AbsentmindedWoman · 17/01/2020 01:47

I love yoga. It makes both my body and mind feel so much better! Gives me an enormous sense of wellbeing. I have one very stiff awkward shoulder which is frequently painful, and it helps so much.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 17/01/2020 04:03

You need a lot of strength to do 20+ chaturangas (like a full pressup) and planks and all the other poses.

Oh God, tell me about it 😂.

I go to an Ashtanga yoga class twice a week & it’s a full on, sweaty physical workout.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/01/2020 08:02

I can do a balance class no worries. So a track which moves from downward dog, plank, crocodile to up dog. So don't have any issue with strength.

Never been challenged in a yoga class but our gym doesn't offer ashtanga yoga which I'd like to try.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 17/01/2020 09:48

By the way, I hope nobody is taking my post a criticism of anyone who does yoga and loves it...I wish I did but think I have to accept it's not for me. Or I need to find a more dynamic YouTuber than Adrienne.

Meltedicicle · 17/01/2020 09:53

The Yoga with Adrienne weight loss series is a bit better. Faster paced and more challenging. Some of her other stuff is a bit ‘chatty’ but it depends what mood I’m in because sometimes it’s good to listen to her waffle on as her upbeatness rubs off! What I tend to do now is a HIIT workout first then an Adrienne episode to stretch out.

IHeartKingThistle · 17/01/2020 09:56

Body balance has music, I love it.

Delatron · 17/01/2020 11:55

I think it’s also ok not to like the spiritual side of it. That’s why I prefer Pilates, last yoga class I went to the instructor spent 15 minutes reading a poem she had written. I don’t have time for that, I need to workout and get a sweat on.

I have tried lots of different forms and accepted I’m just a Pilates girl.

UYScuti · 17/01/2020 12:00

I have always practiced yoga at home on my own, I use it as a therapeutic practice to recover from the running and strength training etc

Weepingwillows12 · 17/01/2020 12:14

I think it depends why you are doing yoga. For me it's to try and calm myself whilst getting more flexible. If you are after the endorphins/ the tired ache from a full on exercise session then maybe it's the wrong activity for you. I am pretty new to it so doing beginners stuff but I can feel the difference already after a few weeks.

UYScuti · 17/01/2020 12:18

I use yoga to maintain flexibility I feel like you have to be very gymnastic to use it for gaining strength, I mean you have to have pretty good balance upper body strength and flexibility to do the advanced poses, I'd love to be able to do the scorpion and all that but..... ain't gonna to happen😕

RacheyCat · 17/01/2020 13:58

I think pilates and yoga complement each other beautifully. The pilates I do gives me the strength to challenge myself in yoga, but the yoga has given me a range of movement and flexibility I didn't have before.

For those who find pilates boring, if you go to a Les Mills gym, I'd really recommend CXWORX. It's a core strengthening class with upbeat music and is by far and away the most euphoric I feel all week.

I really want to try Body Balance, but it's on at annoying times and the instructor is very good looking and I don't want to humiliate myself in front of him by being shit. If you're alright at yoga, is it easy enough?

Oblomov20 · 17/01/2020 14:05

Yoga and Pilates do absolutely nothing for me.
