Am I being a snowflake?

You'll rarely find me offended or pearl clutching but my 6 yr olds school reading book has got me a little twitchy.

We had to have a conversation about the 'olden days' and corporal punishment.

I find the aggression in the teachers face most disturbing!

I feel like asking the school to put it out of commission....
so, am I being a snowflake?

Yes you are!

Rystall · 14/01/2020 19:29

I think you’re being a little over sensitive. I think a child would see the teacher more like a cartoon character than aggressive. Plus we can’t and shouldn’t whitewash history- it was a fact of life until reasonably recently. Wait until your child starts reading Horrible Histories!! Those books are 100 times worse and kids can’t get enough of them!

stevenage42 · 14/01/2020 19:31

I think you are being too sensitive. It's done in an age appropriate manner, it's a fact, and no harm in them knowing about how it used to be in the olden days.

Ok!

Happy to be told I'm being a bit silly!

I'm off to have a word with myself and maybe a dry slap across me canister for good measure Grin

Fairly accurate picture if memory serves! A good conversation to have with your son about how times have changed and violence isn't acceptable in any form now.

MiniGuinness · 14/01/2020 19:39

I think William’s face is a little more disturbing. A little schadenfreude going on there.

TheMemoryLingers · 14/01/2020 19:41

I find the 'a's in that typeface a bit disturbing! Grin

I'm guessing they're deliberately done in handwriting style to make it easier for the children but they just look wrong in print.

CormoranStrike · 14/01/2020 19:42

I would not be offended by that a mum remembers what school used to be like.

Nonnymum · 14/01/2020 19:42

I don't think you are being a snowflake (I hate that term) I don't think it is a appropriate picture to be in a book for a 6 year old.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2020 19:44

Yes, you're being a snowflake.

74NewStreet · 14/01/2020 19:48

Were you really contemplating asking the school to remove it from their library?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/01/2020 19:51

I think William’s face is a little more disturbing. A little schadenfreude going on there.

I’m glad I’m not the only one!! 🤣

1forAll74 · 14/01/2020 20:05

Yes,snowflakey. You can't cancel out the past, children should learn about some oldie history about the school times of yesteryear. Just explain a few things to him. If you can't, he can just ask me, as I am over 70 ha ha

maddiemookins16mum · 14/01/2020 20:23

Yabu. It’s part of our social history. I’ve got some Beano comics from the 70’s, Dennis the Menace was forever getting his backside slippered, my nephews love reading them.

ParanoidGynodroid · 14/01/2020 20:56

Eh? The mum is explaining what school used to be like, and making it clear that things were not as “nice” then.

Would you rather the past be airbrushed out?

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 14/01/2020 21:00

Yes, snowflake, this is truth, not being glorified.

confusedandemployed · 14/01/2020 21:02

Yes YABU, think that's been established.

However, can I just express my admiration for the phrase "a dry slap across.me canister"?! I iso hope it's not a typo 😂

FrankiesKnuckle · 14/01/2020 21:49

@confusedandemployed

Not a typo 😁

Thanks all. I've had a long hard look at myself and several strong words were uttered.

Yes you’re being a snowflake. The book is commenting on recent history with a bit of humour. It’s an opportunity to talk about it with your child.

lilgreen · 14/01/2020 21:55

I work with year 1. I sometimes get parents saying books with mild peril (Biff and Chip) are not suitable. They are often the same parents that want their children to read more complex books!Confused

BigOldOakTree · 14/01/2020 21:57

Am I the only one who had to google schadenfreude? Never ever heard that term in 50 years of life.

anotherday4 · 14/01/2020 22:06

I remember this book when I was in primary school over 20 years ago 😱

turkeyontheplate · 14/01/2020 22:09

I'm a snowflake too then. I don't think that is an appropriate image for a 6yo's reading book.

lilgreen · 14/01/2020 22:10

The context is everything! The image does not stand alone.

Ilovetolurk · 14/01/2020 22:13

My mum got the cane at 4 years old

You might well be justified if that was happening to your offspring. A book, not so much
