Suggestions for a holiday in Edinburgh?

I’m looking at spending four nights (which could possibly stretch to five) in Edinburgh early summer this year and was looking for suggestions of plans, things to so.

-I’m an electric wheelchair user. Long distances, rough ground and hills aren’t too much of a problem.

  • I’m travelling by train. Either through Birmingham New Street or London, it doesn’t seem to make a difference from here.
  • Because of how long the journey is I will probably arrive between 3 and 4 on the first day and need to get a train by around 1:30 on the last. But I would like to fit something small in on both days, not just the journey.
  • On one of the full days I’d like to go somewhere outside of Edinburgh to see a bit more of Scotland. Preferably not more than 2 hours on the train.
-I’m not a foodie or into spas.

Edinburgh has loads of hills but they're paved, there's some cobbles. Some of the streets can be very steep but the royal mile isn't too bad. There's loads of things to do in Edinburgh.
The fringe festival runs in august so things are really busy and expensive but from the end of May until July loads of acts do warm up shows if that's something you'd be interested in?
The castle is nice for a nosy but can be expensive we only did it because we had historic Scotland membership, not sure I would have paid it otherwise. Princes street gardens are lovely in nice weather loads of flowers and a ton of pigeons when the cannon goes off. There's a lot of good wee random shops that I like to nosy. I did all the bus tours last time we were there which I actually really enjoyed, they had a pass that covered all of them. When we were on honeymoon we also ventured out to the zoo.

Masses to do in Edinburgh. National Gallery of Scotland and Gallery of Modern Art are stunning (and latter has some gorgeous allotments in the grounds. And a cafe that does fabulous cake. You don't need to be a foodie to like cake?) The Royal Yacht Britannia tour is really interesting, too; when you see how cramped it is, you realise why Charles and Di's honeymoon got off to a rocky start! Holyrood Palace? Just wandering down the Royal Mile and absorbing the history.

Also remember that I really enjoyed the Tenement House and the Camera Obscura - both small, so would be good on your shorter days. (But do check wheelchair access. It's ages since I was there so I'm hazy about stairs.)

Whoops, sorry - the Tenement House is Glasgow, what was I thinking? Told you it was ages since I was there!

Sorry, I've just checked and there's no lift at the Camera Obscura. Apologies for the thoughtless suggestion!

Edinburgh is beautiful - plenty to do & see. The big museum is such a brill and informative day out (and it's free!) has a lovely wee cafe inside. You could visit South Queensferry on a full day, take in the new bridge, there's boat tours daily, you might see dolphins or seals! Have a stroll down royal mile, festival might be on, we went to the festival last year and it was absolutely brillaint, so many activities, fun entertainment to watch and get involved in. There's the gardens which are beautiful, you could have some lunch down there, hopefully if we manage to have some sunshine. Enjoy X

Glasgow is good for a day trip.
