Alternative to oil boilers?

I live quite rurally, no mains gas available (and no plans for it to be installed - I did call the Gas Board, but don't have a spare £350k to pay for the installation). At the moment, we have an oil boiler, as do the majority of the houses in my hamlet. We're thinking of replacing the boiler, and I'm wondering if we should be contemplating some kind of alternative.

I had a supper quick review of some more eco-friendly methods (ground/air source heat pumps), but we really can't afford the estimates of costs of installation, and I can't really get a feel for whether it would destroy our (beautiful and very well-established) garden, and require enormous amounts of building work.

I was really interested to hear of any experiences using different fuels. I'm not keen on Calor Gas, as I think it would be even more expensive to run than oil, and doesn't really get around the fossil fuels thing.

I ordered oil yesterday, and whilst dibbling around on the website, found that some oil companies are beginning to work towards a bio fuel that will work in oil boilers. If the govt is working towards decarbonising, then they will have to address the problems of those of us who are off grid for gas. Try and sink a heat pump under my house and you might hit a mine shaft, and it won't replace my range either for cooking.

We swapped from LPG to oil as it was cheaper. The govt is going to have stump up the readies if it wants change.

Thanks scary, that doesn't seem to be on offer on the companies we've used so far for our oil, but a super quick google leads to some interesting info. Agreed re govt involvement, I'm wondering if they'll put pressure on the gas companies to invest. There's the renewable energy incentive, which might be a possibility. I need to look into things a bit more, thank you for this idea.

Nobody in the two villages where I am have mains gas; even the new builds are private gas (LPG).
