Where can I take DH for his 50th? Help! (Plus I need to keep the children alive).

I was planning to take him to Amsterdam as he loves it but there's only one person who can take the kids and she's only one it once and she fed him something he's anaphylactic to.
Whilst I believe it was a genuine error, and she won't do it again - I'm a little bit nervous to leave the country.

It's DH'a 50th at the end of the summer and I really want to take him somewhere that's 2-4 max. We're in Brighton.

Can anyone help?

Just to be extra unhelpful, I don't actually know what I want to do.

When the plan was Amsterdam, I was rich with choice.

2-4 hours away max, so many typos

Why cant you take the kids too if you are worried?

okiedokieme · 13/01/2020 22:10

Take the kids?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/01/2020 22:22

We take the kids with us to every single thing we do apart from work.
One of us has been with one of them nearly every day since DC was born 14 years ago.

I'm starting a thread asking where to take my lovely DH out, just us, this once for his 50th birthday and the answer is;

"Take the kids"?!

Just to clarify - I'm asking for recommendations of where to take my DH.

Have you ever been to Rome? It's my favourite European city and its amazing.

Nomorelaundry · 13/01/2020 22:26

How old is your DC?

DartmoorChef · 13/01/2020 22:26

Sorry, saw that you want to be in the uk. New forest? Bath?

NoTeaForMe · 13/01/2020 22:27

How old are your children? Is there really no-one else you can leave them with? (No judgement, we only have my parents and that is a very rare occasion as they live hours away from us) However, if there is no-one else I’m not sure you enjoy the time, won’t you be worried about the last time happening again?

London! Book a show see the sights, walk along the river!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/01/2020 22:36

14, 7 and 1.

Yes I am worried which is why I want to be nearby. But I believe it was a genuine error. Plus she would be at our house this time so strict rules not to feed him stuff that wasn't already provided.

We live very close to London and been there many times growing up.

I like the idea of bath though!

Where in Bath is nice?

A day trip on a ferry to France for lunch?

shiningstar2 · 13/01/2020 22:46

Leave the car behind and come further north by train? York is interesting and not to long a journey by train. Newcastle ...again not too far by train. Lovely hotels on the river with good restaurants on hand for nights out great walks along the riverside. Quayside all lit up at nights and a quirky market for a short stroll along the river on a Sunday morning.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/01/2020 22:50

Thank you.

Another thing has just dawned on me is that we would need new passports (both out of date) so even more the reason to stay in the country.

Winchester is a lovely old city not too far away from you.

Footiefan2019 · 13/01/2020 22:53

How old is the child with the allergy? Is there really no way you can leave them for a couple of days ? If a teen can they not manage their own allergy ? Not being facetious just asking. Could each child not stay with a separate school friend for an couple of days ?

BrieAndChilli · 13/01/2020 22:55

What is it you want to do?
City with cocktail bars and shops and a museum?
Country hotel with long walks and log fires in country pubs?
Markets or theatre, cathedrals or hills?? Beaches or buildings? Activities or lots of food and drink?

Might help narrow it down!!

Bath is lovely, you have the Roman baths.
York was lovely, lots to see and do

Tenby is lovely but less to do in terms of culture

Footiefan2019 · 13/01/2020 22:56

Anyway I’d do either Bath in a lovely air b n b in the city Centre. Or what about the Norfolk coast ? Or a spa hotel in the middle of no where with amazing food, Hugh feebler whittingstalls place ? Something like that ?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/01/2020 22:56

He's 7 and he's absolutely will leave them for a couple of day's - that's the plan.
Sorry I don't think I made myself clear in the OP.

It's rather that I don't want to go all the way the Amsterdam, I want to be closer in case something happens.
So, same stretch of time but be 3-4 hours drive away rather than waiting for planes.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/01/2020 22:58

Brieandchilli I want to do all of that!!

I need to think what DH would like though, not spas.
He likes space. So maybe some kind of space sky thing and dinner.

I like bath and the Roman baths that sounds lovely too.

Is there anything he likes doing? Any particular sport? Really into wine or food?

Bellabelloo · 13/01/2020 22:58

Sorry! Posted at the same time!

Depending what you want, Lincoln is great for a couple of days if you like a bit of history, and has direct trains from Kings Cross, as does York. Both would be about three hours from Brighton by train.
