Why do clients leave a penny on the table?

Are they testing the cleaner, to see if they'll take it?

This is the third time this has happened. I'm cleaning for my side job and they always make it so obvious. Why the table and why a penny ffs?

Are there really people out there who think the cleaner wants to steal a worthless penny?

I do find coins behind sofas, on counters etc but it's very obvious that someone has just emptied their pockets.

When I clean a house for the first time and they leave it on a clean table then I know it's there to test. There's always one coin. Today the client left a rupee.

Theyre testing to see if it moves-to see if youve cleaned the table

RachelEllenR · 13/01/2020 19:25

I totally trust my cleaner and often leave change in weird places. Definitely not a test. I did test one cleaner once who stole wine from an open bottle. Not sure if she was drinking it there or decanting some to take home!

Back in the 70s my mum was cleaner. One client was always testing her with money left out. One day said client left a sheet of 1st class stamps on the floor, half hidden under a rug. My mum wet-mopped the floor and put the stamps back, sticky side down.

A week later she went back and said it was clear client had tried to remove stamps with a wallpaper scraper Grin

(stamps were lick and stick back then).

Oh please do the shiny coin swap. What a head fuck 🤣

2020BetterBeBetter · 13/01/2020 19:43

I let my cleaner in when I am out, therefore, I trust them. I certainly don’t do tests of any description but I do hate loose change, especially coppers, so periodically leave little piles or odd coins around.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 13/01/2020 19:47

We have coins in various places. We don't have a cleaner.

TriangleBingoBongo · 13/01/2020 20:22

My DH leaves money everywhere. It’s not a special effort for the cleaner.

MrsTumbletap · 13/01/2020 20:59

We have random 20ps here and there. They must fallout of DHs pockets, definitely not a cleaner test. I would love it if they were all collected and put in a pile in the kitchen, might even have a few quid all together.

MrsDilligaf · 13/01/2020 21:10

If I went round my house I'd probably find twenty quid in change. I swear pennies breed.

I do remember telling my cleaner that if she found a few tenners lying about that it wasn't a trick, but that if she didn't find any not to worry. Dd had emptied DH's wallet, and he wasn't sure how much cash he had Hmm (I'd know, especially if it was notes!)

WarmSausageTea · 13/01/2020 21:14

I don’t like carrying change around, so I’ll usually leave it on the side, whether at home or in a hotel, If I’m in a hotel, I’ll usually throw it in a drawer so it doesn’t look odd/like a weird test to the cleaner.

lboogy · 13/01/2020 21:17

It's not to test you. I leave coins around the house because I forget to put them away. I hope my cleaner doesn't think I'm testing her😕

taybert · 13/01/2020 21:18

There’s always random coins on odd surfaces in our house. It’s just change taken out of pockets. A penny is a fairly common unit of change due to things being 99p. There’s loads of stuff in weird places in our house though, my cleaner probably thinks I’m doing some sort of MI5 aptitude test with her.

KenDodd · 13/01/2020 21:19

I've got random coins all over the place. I don't even have a cleaner.

Taddda · 13/01/2020 21:24

Theres always a penny on my table for scratchcards!

CakeAndGin · 13/01/2020 21:26

We don’t have a cleaner but there are random coins all over our house. There’s currently a penny on the side of the bath. It’s mostly when DH puts change in his pockets, undresses waking around the house, coins will fall out of his pockets. They usually get picked up when we hoover and then put on the side with the intention of being put in the change vase, but it doesn’t always happen so the coin sits there for a while.

I hope our dog walker doesn’t think we’re testing her by leaving coins scattered all over the house Confused. Although we sometimes leave our wedding rings on the mantelpiece Aim plain sight. Again more out of habit rather than testing the dog walker.

INeedNewShoes · 13/01/2020 21:28

There are at least 4 different places in my house where you might find random coins. I don't even have a cleaner!

okiedokieme · 13/01/2020 21:29

There's random coins in various currencies scattered about my house, it's not a test, it's just how my house is, we've been a few places and just dumped coins in unlikely places

trilbydoll · 13/01/2020 21:30

There's coins everywhere in this house, I'm messy, kids love emptying my purse, it's a terrible combination.

Currently there is a fake dog poo being moved around the house, I don't dare ask the cleaners what they thought of that.

Sux2buthen · 13/01/2020 21:45

That's weird. I clean and I've recently noticed coins in weird places around an office.
I don't ever touch money at all at work and just clean around it.

Lazydaisydaydream · 13/01/2020 21:47

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I LOVE this suggestion Grin

BobLobLawLLB · 13/01/2020 21:48

I used to clean holiday homes. The owners had been for the weekend. I picked up a straw box in the bathroom that was kept on the floor for toilet rolls so i could mop. Underneath it was a pound coin.
It could not have rolled under so definitely put there to a) see if i clean properly or b) keep it. I put it into a dated envelope and handed it in to the office.

Hadtoask · 13/01/2020 22:02

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily that is so hilarious I want to get a cleaning job just to do that. So funny
