Long holidays v more flexibility

I work in education. Not a school and not a teacher but I work school terms and have the holidays off. It's wonderful Smile

However, now my DC are grown up I'm starting to resent being tied to the school holidays for my own travel plans. Not so much the cost, I'm used to and accept having to take holidays in peak time, but some of the trips I want to do simply aren't available in school holidays.

For example, I play a sport to a reasonable standard and my club often arranges trips to play against clubs in other cities/countries. They'll be at a weekend but usually require at least one extra day to fit in the travel, so I can never go.

Most activity holidays, aimed at adults rather than families, avoid the school holiday period and for some parts of the world, the summer isn't the best time to go, which is the only time I can have 2 weeks together, especially if you can't travel Saturday-Saturday.

There is absolutely no flexibility to ask for an additional day off (maybe for a funeral) and certainly not to do a number of these trips a year, as I would like to.

OTOH, I can't imagine going back to 5 weeks leave per year, I'm not sure I could hack it anymore. Grin

Do I just have to leave these trips for when I retire? That seems a risky policy, it may never happen!
