Anyone else had near constant heart palpitations?

I've been having heart palpitations since Wed or Thurs evening. They lasted for maybe half an hour to an hour mainly in the evenings and then began earlier yesterday and lasted the rest of the day until I had to go bed early as it was so uncomfortable.

I've had them all day today with a feeling of pressure in the centre of my chest. I've been in and out of bed all day as have not much energy to do anything.

I do have anxiety and have had palpitations on the past but they have been fleeting. I take beta-blockers every day.

I'm going to phone the doctor in the morning for an appointment but was just wondering if anyone had ever experienced it before and if so what it was??

Yes, constantly every couple of minutes for three days. Had ECG, bloods, all normal. They stopped by themselves. Total mystery, however, I cut out caffeine all together and haven't had any problems since.

whisperedout · 12/01/2020 23:09

@TossACoinToYourWitcher Weird. Yep, that sounds like me. I have 1 cup of coffee in the morning and that's all. I do drink a lot of diet soda though...

I sometimes get them when I am tired or ill.
You are right to check with the Dr.

You could try some of the tips in this article to stop them

I find the Valsava manoeuvre does work for mine sometimes.

Could be unstable angina. Definitely see your GP and take it from there.

TantricTwist · 12/01/2020 23:29

Might be AF (atrial fibrillation) or atrial flutter or just anxiety. You need an ECG to rule out any heart conditions out which your GP should be able to do.

I had low iron and vit d

Bobbiepin · 12/01/2020 23:37

Low iron can cause palpitations; are you more tired than usual? Getting headaches?

whisperedout · 12/01/2020 23:39

I said to my husband yesterday that the only thing I've been doing differently lately is that I started taking echinacea on Wednesday and I wondered if it could be reacting with other meds I'm on. I didn't take any today just in case.

A quick Google has said that echinacea can have an effect on how the body breaks down caffeine and it may cause a faster heartbeat (among other things that I'm not showing symptoms of).

Hmm... I wonder if that's it??

@Bobbiepin I am always tired so it's difficult to say!

Cut out the coffee and the diet soda - with that level of palpitations you need to remove all caffeine from your diet.

ElfCakes · 12/01/2020 23:59

I get heart palps when my vit b12 levels are low.
Sounds sensible to speak to the GP though, Hope all is well

gavisconismyfriend · 13/01/2020 00:13

I had what sounds like something similar. Realised my Diet Coke intake had gradually crept up and up. Stopped drinking it, continued with my regular tea intake - couldn’t give caffeine up altogether! Seems to have sorted the palpitations.

FusionChefGeoff · 13/01/2020 07:22

This is the list of triggers that my cardiologist gave me (from memorry so might forget some!)

  • caffeine
  • artificial sweeteners in diet drinks / food
  • decongestants
  • chocolate
  • anti histamines
  • alcohol
  • nicotine

My own experience:

  • dehydration
  • lack of sleep
loserssaywhat · 13/01/2020 07:24

I have had this. I would definitely get it checked out to set your mind at rest.
Mine turned out to be low iron and anxiety.

earlydoors42 · 13/01/2020 07:56

I get them when my thyroxene dose is too high - giving the same effect as an overactive thyroid. Worth a thyroid check?

Roselilly36 · 13/01/2020 07:59

I have them if I have eaten foods containing MSG I have noticed, it is in a lot of foods, gravy, ice cream, Chinese, sauces etc.

whisperedout · 13/01/2020 09:35

Thanks all. I've got an appointment later this morning so will see what becomes of that.

If it’s been going on that long you should be calling 111 or going to A&E.

Bobbiepin · 14/01/2020 18:27

Did you go to the doctor OP? Hope you're feeling better now.

whisperedout · 14/01/2020 20:29

@Bobbiepin I did thanks. I'm booked in for bloods and an ecg in 2.5 weeks. I have been feeling better actually. The palpatations calmed down last night but came on again this morning. They're away again this evening.

It ties in with the echinacea so I'm going with that at the moment and will see what happens. I'm just glad to be feeling a bit better.
