Remineralising teeth

Do people here have experience of their teeth remineralising?

Basically I had an addiction to energy drinks for a long time. I used to drink a can a day. Towards the end of my addiction, I sometimes even had two cans. Before I became addicted to energy drinks, I used to drink juice most days which is just as acidic.

My front teeth are yellow and the tips are translucent. They look different to so many other peoples teeth. Others peoples teeth are white and look more solid.

I have nightmares about my teeth falling out.

All energy drinks are gone from my diet now. I don't drink juice any more. I don't have two sugars in my tea any more.

The only drinks I drink is water, milk and tea.

I cleaned up my diet big time over the past few years. Chocolate, biscuits, crisps are rare. A lot of my diet consists of eggs, cheese, veg, cereals, pasta, toast. I take a vitamin c supplement, and vitamin d. I'm on and off taking a bone supplement.

I googled and read things online that teeth remineralising can happen with cutting out grains, eating foods rich in nutrients and minerals like veg and meat, and take supplements.

Do you think I would be able to remineralise my teeth to a state where they will look more opaque and solid? If I was to cut out grains and limit carbs.

I'm so disappointed in myself with the way my teeth are and I wish I could turn back time. I would do so much things differently.

Have you tried enamel repair toothpaste? From what I understand, the yellow underneath shows when the enamel is damaged. May be worth a try. I'm no dentist though so there are probably lots of other things out there that may help

You can remineralise enamel but you can't grow new enamel.

The problem is you have lost enamel, it's not going to come back sorry OP.

This is a picture of my teeth.

Is this complete enamel loss here or is it thin enamel?

I use a regular Colgate toothpaste.

Half the enamel wore off the front of my front teeth, they went from shiny white to matt creamy-brown half way down, and I could run my finger over my front teeth and feel the dip as the enamel ran out and you were onto the brown dentine. (My parents were told when I was young that I was born with an inherited problem that meant I had very thin enamel and that it was likely to wear off very easily).

I thought I'd have to have veneers, and was too embarrassed to smile. I have a dentist phobia and haven't been for years. (The last time I did go, the one I saw said that he had only seen that sort of enamel erosion in dental text books where people had been drinking litres of fruit juice a day .)

Anyway, I started using a repair and protect toothpaste from a famous brand. I didn't think it would do a thing. Now, about four years later, one of my front teeth has a glossy white (albeit a bit bumpy) enamel covering it, and the other one is almost fixed and just has a sliver of brown left nearest the gum.

I didn't believe it could work, and I don't know how it works, but it's done an awful lot for my teeth. I think it's super.

The regenerate toothpaste is meant to be good but I haven't personally tried it

jellycatspyjamas · 12/01/2020 22:05

You can get high flouride toothpaste on prescription that helps at least preserve and strengthen what’s there. Ask your dentist about it.

yogo · 12/01/2020 22:07

Your teeth look okay to me OP

SheepGoesBaa · 12/01/2020 22:07

I'm going to the dentist on Tuesday so I will ask him for a prescription toothpaste

Willow tree , sorry to read about your dental problems. I have a fear of the dentist too but it's getting easier with each visit.

I never tried regenerate toothpaste. I'm going to ask my dentist for a prescription.

Yogo, you're very kind.

Enamel gives teeth the white colour. My teeth are yellow and the tips are translucent which tells me enamel is thin or gone.

I refuse to go down the road of whitening treatments because they can do more harm than good. I want to mind wants there.

I would love if my teeth were a better colour/white and more opaque.

When your brush your teeth just spit out the toothpaste instead of rinsing thoroughly - this leaves toothpaste residue on the teeth that helps protect enamel and possibly remineralise. If that sounds a bit grim it helps to brush twice - first time rinsing thoroughly and second time just spitting toothpaste out.

Orangeshark · 12/01/2020 22:26

If you drank a can of red bull everyday you will have lost some enamel

However really your teeth don't look bad. Tips being translucent and teeth being yellow is normal.

I have never heard or seen of a toothpaste that will actually regenerate enamel. Willows story doesn't make masses of sense.

Realistically OP you are going to have to accept your teeth as they are or go down the whitening route. Teeth whitening by a dentist shouldn't damage your teeth.

Orangeshark · 12/01/2020 22:27

You won't get regenerate on prescription.

You can get high fluoride toothpaste, although that won't grow back enamel, only remineralise. But your enamel isn't demineralised and your diet is good so its pointless

I've been leaving a film of toothpaste on my teeth before bed for a long time. It's probably something that has saved my teeth during my addiction years. I read it in a book years ago around about 2009 or 2010. I think it was around about 2010 when my addiction took place.

Lately over the past few months I've stepped up the oral hygiene routine. I floss, use mouthwash, put on toothpaste on my teeth. Leave for 2/3 minutes, brush my teeth, and then brush my tongue and rinse (to make sure any plaque or nasties are gone). Then I paint the toothpaste on my teeth again and leave it there for another few more minutes before swishing about and spitting out. My mouth and teeth feel clean after doing this routine.

I don't have time for the full routine every night but do it as often as I can. Maybe 3/4 nights a week.

Before going to sleep, I tape my mouth because I'm a mouth breather at night. On the nights I don't tape my mouth, I feel it the next morning. Not with pain but theres some sort of dryness or film on my teeth. I like mouth taping.
