I've been in my job nearly 6m. I knew I'd made a mistake in the first week but I thought it might be being a newbie etc but my gut instinct was right. 6m on and I still hate it. The actual job is a bit naff and not really what I had expected but I can deal with that. However it's the people. My manager micromanages me, constantly reminds me of deadlines that I'm already on with and is always asking have you done this, have you done that? I have made a point of cc- ing her in literally every fucking email but I have found that has made things even worse as she knows exactly where I am at with each thing and will keep asking me about has x/ y / got back to you? Have you got back to them etc

Also my team is very small. We have 2 others in my team and they are very very cliquey. Their job is not really related to mine so they work quite independently to me. I feel like a girl in the playground feeling left out! I've tried talking to them, small talk etc and even brought in biscuits and a chocolate box on 2 separate occasions to seem friendly but they just don't really want to know!

The only plus is the pension and the commute is short.

Should I leave or stay here for the pension? I would look for another job internally but in the 6m of being here they've never had anything suitable and TBF jobs rarely come up as they are very tight on funding.

Dh is saying if it's making me so miserable to just quit. He has said that he's noticed my mood definitely has changed and he's right. I'm unhappy and I'm more ratty and probably a miserable cow to live with!

WWYD?

None of us know our expiry date! Do everything you can to enjoy life to the full. It won't be the only job out there with a decent pension. Leave asap.

I quit the civil service after 25 years ( great pension) because I just couldn't put myself through the misery of working for that miserable soulless lot another second longer.
One life. Live it.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2020 21:56

Sounds best to stay until you find another job with a good pension

  • at 40 you really need to be planning your pension / standard of living in retirement.

Your manager sounds a controlling nightmare,
but as your colleagues don't really work with you, it shouldn't matter if they stay strangers.
You can't expect to necessarily make friends at work, but you can't stay long if they are actively unpleasant

Can you assess if she is likely to move on in a year or so,
or do people there tend to stay forever in the same job ?

My job is so boring too @myCucumber and I’m basically staying for the benefits. I knew within the first day it wasn’t for me but have now been there 16 tedious months 🤦‍♀️ Can’t afford to change jobs but have a plan to retrain in 4 years to do what I actually want to do. That’s what is keeping me going (plus listening to podcasts, comedians and music on my phone!!)

Have a read of this - see if you can understand why you get micromanaged

leave leave leave! imagine staying in that job, being miserable, for thirty more years because of the good pension, then getting run over by a bus the day after you retire! You only get one life, don't spend it being made utterly miserable. I would temp until another job came up, there will be other admin jobs that do have good pension schemes, just keep looking!

myCucumber · 13/01/2020 12:05

You guys are right. Life is too bloody short. They pay is crap here too so it wouldn't be like I was here for the money. I actually was getting paid slightly more temping.

I've contacted the agency I was with and they will be looking for me. As soon as I find something with them I'm going to hand in my notice. At the same time I will constantly be looking for jobs too but at least I'm out of here.

It's such a shame as I was really happy that I'd got this job as Ive always wanted to work here. I thought it would be really good experience but never mind.

For most people life is NOT short. And being older with no pension (other than state) won’t be fun. If you don’t have a pension through your employer, suggest investigating options to save for when you’re older.
