I need to buy some new suitcases. I’ve never had the hard plastic ones before and am considering them but I’m wondering if they might crack when thrown about at the airport. Obvs the cheaper the more chance of this but also I can’t afford the really expensive ones! Thanks

We’ve got the Tripp ‘holiday’ ones. In black.
I would buy them again if these 3 ever break.
We have the set of large, medium and small - small being the one you can take onboard. Probably been on a dozen flights and holidays in boot of car. Scuffed but going strong.
Ours have 4 wheels so really easy to move about in hotels and airports.

Would get a bright colour next time to make identification on the airport luggage carousel easy!

They are on sale now on Debenhams website, £135 for the S/m/l set.

Though ‘hard plastic’ they are flexible but once zipped up, are firm.

That’s great! Thanks so much

@beanaseireann you really need to look at the Ryanair website as there are so many variables depending on whether you have priority boarding or not.

FWIW I travel with a reasonable sized rucksack - it fits under the seat in front so I have never had to pay any extra. They are much stricter with the hard-sided wheely cases these days.

My hard case (large one) was £30 in primark!

It's still going strong 5 airplane trips later Grin

howdoesthisworkagain · 12/01/2020 13:43

A friend had a hard one and it got damaged and the aircraft paid for it when she complained. You might be able to find policies on their airline website.

Thank you katz

Have a look in TK MAXX. Lots of different ones and they're really cheap. Also have nice designs

FlamingoAndJohn · 12/01/2020 17:18

I second Tripp from Debenhams.

Really sold and well priced.

Itsashame · 12/01/2020 18:02

I actually looked in tkmaxx Today. Saw an antler one which was a good price but to change the locking code, you needed a key and the key wasn’t with it!!

I lost a suitcase key at the airport once and was sweating to death in a tracksuit Angrydefinetely combinations

Itsashame · 12/01/2020 18:43

Yes it did have a combination lock thing, I probably didn’t explain properly in my post. It was set up 0000 but needed a key to change the code and the key wasn’t there!

I'd avoid zips. Also get a good thick luggage strap so if anything does go wrong. Easier to spot too.

Feelingfestivenow · 12/01/2020 19:07

I travel a lot by air, just replaced a couple of cases with these

www.samsonite.co.uk/s-cure-spinner-75cm-aqua-blue/49308-1012.html?cgid=luggage_suitcases#start=1&cgid=luggage_suitcases

Hardsided cases with no zips are my preferred choice, I have had some expensive (and some no so) hardsided with zips and thats the weakest point for the cases to go, and they did, thanks to a couple of airports heavy handling. KLM airlines taped the last one up with parcel tape which made a sticky mess and could not get the brown tape off so I claimed, and they sent money for a replacement.

But dependant on your budget and how often you use your cases there are cheaper options. TKMaxx do have some good bargains. But you will be hard pushed to find hardsided without zips.

As far as Ryanair goes you can get carry on cases that fit their dimensions, dont forget to include the wheels in the sizing.

Itsashame · 12/01/2020 19:14

Ah, I’d never have thought about cases without zips. I didn’t know it was a thing!

One thing about the combination lock it to be wary if you ever go to the USA. Most cases have locks that the American security people can open with a universal key. They open random checked in cases. If yours is checked in and doesn’t have the special key they will force the lock. Even though mine has the special key thing they left that turned to unlock so I can never lock that case again !
