What contraception would you go for in this circumstance?

39, married, 2 children and not planning any more. I've currently got the copper coil and hate it due to longer and heavier periods. I'm getting it out next week but don't know if I should:

A) try the mirena coil. But i am worried about the acne side effect as I've struggled terribly with hormonal cystic acne in the past. Pregnancy seemed to settle it down and it's much better now and I'm scared to reignite it again.

B) the combined contraceptive pill. I was on this for years when i was younger and I was gererally fine. But it seems to be prescribed with caution once you hit 40. Also, coming off the pill inflamed the terrible acne and I wouldn't want to go through that again. But control over my periods and a decent cycle length would be amazing.

C) good old condoms. Functional but not much fun and a bit yucky. Would also mean I would still get periods which were quite heavy before I even had the copper coil put in. Plus I have a short cycle of around 23 days so would mean having to put up with that. But no hormones and so hopefully no skin issues.

D) the snip. But unfortunately a close friend of ours has had pain and problems ever since he got one and it has scared us both off it.

E) any other suggestions very welcome?!

Look into the Nexplanon Implant. No oestrogen. Almost no periods for me.

Ballerine coil

@dung I think the OP has likely tried just washing her bloody face. How rude.

@ThighThighofthigh I was on Dianette previously and it was amazing. My skin was glowing. But even back then when age wasn't a factor I was only allowed on it for a limited time due to the much higher risk of blood clots on it.

're skincare regimes, unfortunately the best skin cleansing habits in the world, including prescribed topical solutions didn't even touch the sides of the cystic acne.

I read last night that the progesterone level in the mirena is the equivalent to only 2 days of the mini pill so it might be worth considering giving it a go and hoping it's such a low and localised dose it won't inflame my skin.

Thanks for the suggestions of the other methods i hadn't considered. I'll look into them too.

I'm in the same position as you. I went to the go this week and he has just prescribed microgynon. I was on this previously with no issues. He did the usual heath checks and gave me a three month supply. I need to see the nurse in three months to check all is ok and if so I can just go onto a repeat prescription. I did ask his advice and when we discussed my options this was the one we both thought would be most suitable.

The snip. Persistent pain isn’t a common side effect and for heavens sake, women deal with a lot more pain and hassle over their lifetimes.

MinnieMountain · 12/01/2020 12:49

The snip. If you're done having DC it's the best option IMHO.

It will also mean you can be rid of the heavy periods. It was such a relief when my copper coil was removed and they went back to normal.

I had the mirena for years 2 in a row and I love it no periods no pain nothing. Going to have another put in soon fabulous

Whitegrenache · 12/01/2020 13:09

Mirena every time - I have no periods and no acne

Low progesterone and as someone else said it's great for HRT (progesterone) if you are near peri menopause age
