Tell me about your teenage dd's bedroom?

How's it decorated?
What storage does she have?
What's it laid out like -furniture wise (and is it a large room)?
Does she have shelves?

Do you store any extra (non dd) stuff in there?

I'm considering re-decorating/organising dd1's bedroom at half term, but am lacking inspiration. Pinterest was full of Insta-bedrooms but none really that I could see my dd actually using.

She's going to have a think about it herself but I thought I'd ask you lot as well :)

she has a double bed in the middle of the room (white sheets and then colourful pillows) facing the windows. on the left wall to the bed she has shelves, and on the right she has her cupboard. above her bed she has made a 'photo heart' (ordered photos of different sizes off of free prints and arranged them in a heart shape to look like this. on the same wall as her shelves she has a chest of drawers, which doubles as a vanity as she has a mirror on top of them, and a makeup organiser. I do store other items in there underneath her bed as it is an ottoman so lifts up. her walls are painted grey and she has LED lights stuck on the top edge of her walls by the ceiling.

lucysmam · 11/01/2020 21:54

Thanks @sleepismysuperpower1, that sounds really nice.

I like the photo heart idea - my dd has a fair few posters so I wonder if we could maybe make them a little more organised than just scattered about.

& she definitely needs shelves in there - she has a large desk but uses it as desk, vanity unit and tends to sit at it when she plays x-box with her friends. It's a bit cluttered to say the least!

I like the LED light strip idea too; she was talking about remote controlled, colour changing, light bulbs the other day so maybe I'll have a proper look at those as well :)

DD will be 13 when we redo her room next year.

She lives in a loft extension so only half of the walls are straight enough for shelf units and wardrobe.

She I’ll have a sofa/daybed with a trundle bed for the actual bed, trunk for bedding storage and will use the top bit as a sitting area. Plus a new bean bag. The sofa part will have a proper mattress for a sleepover. DH had this set up at uni for shared housing and it worked really well.

We will get her some cupboard and shelving made to measure to accommodate the eaves.

New larger desk with drawer unit. At least one, maybe two shelving units for books and drawers (again, made to fit) for make up, hair stuff, all kind of collectibles, new wardrobe.

My teenage DD's bedroom is hers - I wouldn't dream of organising it let alone storing things in there, that'd be a real invasion of her space. Teenagers need to make a little place fully their own IMO.

My DD has a not very big room - the size estate agents might say is a small double but is really a single because if you put a double in there you'd have to have one side against the wall.

She has a wardrobe to the left of the door, a shoe storage area, shelves she uses for books and a few display items on the wall in front of the door, with a radio/ cd player, then her big desk - enough space for homework books on the surface and a PC, with draws incorporated on one side, a single bed - she has scatter cushions and throws, another bookcase and an aquarium which she takes good care of. She has her own art and art from her friends all over the big wall, as well as a big mirror, and a collage of probably 60 photos on the small wall.

She's done it all 100% herself. She even painted the "feature wall" a dark aquamarine colour - bought the paint with her allowance.

She's proud of her room and keeps it tidy actually it's the tidiest room in the house and likes showing me anything new she's done. It's 100% hers and I wouldn't dream of doing anything but admire it. I assume that's partly personality and partly because she has total ownership and control over her tiny bit of the house.

She was quite messy until she was about 11 but is the opposite now.

girlofthenorth · 11/01/2020 23:47

My DD15 organised her own room , we painted but she loves art and has some MH issues - we let her paint her own stuff on the walls - some of its awful but some of it is beautiful and she's very clever with textiles and textures.
Not conventional but her own space .

Weenurse · 11/01/2020 23:51

Double bed next to window. Book shelf book case at the end of her bed.
Desk next to bed with 2 open shelves above and built in robes across on wall. Above dest is a square of blackboard paint so she can write notes and reminders to herself.

JanuaryIsNotTheOnlyMonth · 11/01/2020 23:55

DD’s room is tiny, and her wardrobe is outside on the corridor/landing.
It’s very ‘her’, though - a mix of colours and styles, with rag rugs, wooden shelves, bits of art GCSE, painted triangles and furniture she repaints when she gets the urge.

Drives DH mad. He keeps muttering about going over it with a nice coat of magnolia and cutting in properly round the skirting boards.

Storage is mostly a couple of huge under bed drawers.

JanuaryIsNotTheOnlyMonth · 12/01/2020 00:01

Oh, and she has stuck some cork tiles to the walls as a sort of pin board.

PigAuntie · 12/01/2020 00:05

This is DDs room when we redid it in the summer
The shelves house pretty much everything. You could have it with more storage boxes but DD likes things out on display.

She has a big built in cupboard which is for clothes storage - it has a little chest of drawers in it, hanging tail and a shelf thing for jumpers etc.

@pigauntie love the chair; where is it from! And the peg Board behind desk
I would have loved that kind of room when I was a teen

Topseyt · 12/01/2020 00:10

A smallish room. She likes to keep it as a bonbsite while working for her A Levels, so I just shut the door.

GreenTulips · 12/01/2020 00:11

Try amazon for the light bulbs they play music as well!

DD1 has grey brick wall paper on one wall and she’s very tactile so all about texture. Fleece blankets and fluff

Desk cube tub storage for school books two wardrobes on with shelves

DD2 has grey New York paper and grey walls black curtains her bedding in grey elephants. Desk and cube storage boxes.

Sliding wardrobe as it’s a smaller room.

She has the music light changing bulb which her echo dot can turn on and off.

BrieAndChilli · 12/01/2020 00:24

@greenfieldsaroundhere the chair was from amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00ZUH5U2Q/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Peg board is from ikea, can get all sorts of assecories for it.

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 00:32

Double bed in the middle
Single wardrobe
Two bookcases
A tallboy
A dressing table
A storage unit
Two bedside tables
A comfy chair

greenfieldsaroundhere · 12/01/2020 19:16

Thank you for chair tip

lucysmam · 12/01/2020 22:07

Thank you all very much for the ideas/inspiration, we spent an hour or so looking at ideas today.

We've had an online search for some shelves and a new wardrobe that she likes, and she was going to have a look at paint too.

I quite like the peg board storage idea & saw some bits in poundland last time I was in there so will show her before I go to town this week and see what she says. They might be a good idea for her pens & guitar accessories maybe. Still on hand but not taking up desk space.

We'll have a look at curtains and other soft furnishings when she decides what colour(s) she would like in there. She always uses her Harry Potter bedding & I can't see that changing :)

Colour changing light bulbs are on the list too; she plays music through the echo dot she has or listens to cd's but I can see them being novel so will have a proper look at them for both girls' bedrooms.

Hope the pics work. This is my DD's room. She also has under-bed drawers and a built in wardrobe that you can see from pics.

My dad will be 16 in 2 weeks.

She has a high sleeper bed with a desk and her computer underneath- it’s a bit like a secure cave. She had a built in cupboard which is full of all the stuff she never uses. She had a 2 seat sofa which she never uses anew are thinking of removing but basically her bedroom is straight out of the IKEA showroom where we just ordered absolutely everything in there.

It’s currently yellow. She wants it blue. We are planning a clear out and probably get rid of the sofa. She likes her high sleeper although I’d prefer a normal bed ( her sisters share a room and we are moving them from high and mid sleepers to normal beds

TheFurryMenace · 12/01/2020 23:42

PigAuntie - can I ask where your shelves please? They look great and just what I need for DD!

BrieAndChilli · 13/01/2020 08:13

@TheFurryMenace they are from ikea - £15 each!

TheFurryMenace · 13/01/2020 11:59

Amazing, thanks!

RedskyAtnight · 13/01/2020 12:25

DD is nearly 14. Her room is not very big. She has a single bed down one long wall with drawers underneath, with shelves above the head end of the bed. Bed is normally covered in cushions! On the long wall she's made a (large) collage of photos and put up fairy lights. At the end of the bed is a narrow tall bookcase where most of her stuff lives.
On the opposite long wall there is a chest of drawers where she has a mirror/makeup etc on top (so sort of doubles as dressing table) and a hanging rail for clothes. The door opens in to this wall so space is restricted. There is just about enough space to walk down the middle and she has a "fluffy" rug there.
She also has a fold up desk which is stored in the corner next to the chest of drawers as she has no room for a desk otherwise. she sits on her bed to work if she wants to work in her room or use her laptop (she did have a chair as well but preferred sitting on the bed!)

Goodnightjude1 · 13/01/2020 13:29

DD has a pale lilac bedroom. Where the window was before the extension (now bricked up) has lilac/purple/silver birds wallpaper. She had a white framed double bed with plain white bedding and lots (and lots and lots) of purple/lilac cushions.
She had a white shabby chic vanity unit with mirror and a white shabby chic double wardrobe. She had shelves for books and a flat screen tele on the wall. She has a purple rug on the floor.
Lots of LED lights around mirror and bed that are controlled with a remote (and constantly left on Angry) she’s got little wooden pegs (like a washing line) with pics of her and her friends etc.

There is also half of Topshop on the bedroom floor....Hmm
