Long term effects from Glandular Fever?

MsMarvel · 11/01/2020 19:11

I had glandular fever when i was at uni (so about 10 ish years ago now) so a long time ago.

Since then ive noticed that if im run down or stressed, i get very very tired. I vaguely remember ny doctor at the time telling me that this could happen, and said that because the virus stays dormant in your system so can flare up.

But when i try to google this, i cant find it anywhere!!

Currently very stressed and am extremely tired all the time, been going to bed at 8pm, not up till 9am and having naps during the day. Also got very sore throat and swollen glands. No other cold symptoms.

Is this a thing or am i making it up?? Anyone else suffer long term side effects from glandular fever?

Yes, I had glandular fever around 9 years ago and if I'm stressed or even slightly ill I'm very fatigued and get brain fog, can easily sleep for 12 hours and still feel tired. I've even been to the doctors about it and they basically said there was nothing wrong with me, but I'm convinced it's a lasting effect of glandular fever as I was always really energetic and on the go all the time before I had it, and it was like a switch. For a long time I thought I must just be getting lazy but the more I see/read the more I see its quite common.

I also get swollen glands and sore throat every time I'm a little run down and colds always develop into tonsillitis with me. It's a pain in the arse so I feel your pain!

The blood test for giving blood will just check iron levels, and even then aren't as thorough as GP ones. Other things to check for include Thyroid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and liver and kidney function.

I had it when I was about 13, I've never been the same since. My immune system is shot and I sleep sleep sleep.

I had it as a teen 13years ago & was hospitalised with it.
I am a very tired person, always need extra sleep. I an anemic though so assumed it was that.

newyearagain · 11/01/2020 20:59

Yes me too - I would say tiredness easily lasted 10 years

Saintgarbo you're a cheery soul.

I had glandular fever at 21. Every time I get a virus it knocks me for six, or twelve as I like to say, as I feel the symptoms afterwards far more acutely - sometimes often longer than than the virus itself.

Whenever I'm stressed I'm prone to sore throats and swollen glands, too.

Thank you for starting this thread OP because I would have never thought there are other people that have the same problem I do and I wouldn’t of thought it was linked to glandular fever .

Wallywobbles · 11/01/2020 21:11

Can I suggest some massive doses of Vit D. Won't harm and can have a really shocking impact. Doses in France are massive in comparison to the UK and are routinely prescribed for every one in the north.

I had GF about ten years ago at university. I never thought about it but it could now be linked to the fatigue that I sometimes get. I feel overwhelming tired and only lots of sleep sorts it out! I get this way when stressed/lots going on.

Frasa · 11/01/2020 21:31

I had glandular fever at 18. It is the sickest I ever was. I’ve lived my life under a cloud of tiredness ever since.

A few years after the glandular fever I was diagnosed with pernicious anemia. I’ve always thought the glandular fever brought it on.

I can’t say I ever feel full of energy. Even after a nights sleep I can feel exhausted a couple of hours later. I’d love to know what it’s like to feel energized.

GreenTowels · 11/01/2020 21:33

I had GF at uni and I was in my mid-30s before the debilitating tiredness went. It wasn’t all the time, but whenever I was ill or run-down, I felt like I’d been hit by a truck. Literally couldn’t get out of bed or do anything. And then it just vanished and I’ve been fine for 15 years!

Witchend · 11/01/2020 22:29

but I'm convinced it's a lasting effect of glandular fever as I was always really energetic and on the go all the time before I had it, and it was like a switch
That's exactly how I would describe it too.

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 11/01/2020 22:34

I had glandular fever in the early 1980's. It really knocked me. I was emaciated went down to 5stone from 8 stone. Milder symptoms would reoccur for a good 12 years, every time I was stressed and rundown.

People are saying about sleep. I would easily sleep for 12 hours a night during a relapse, and sleep much more in general until I stopped getting relapses in my late 20's.

Now I seem to only need 6/7 hours a night.

I think it stays with you for a very long time but in my case it did go eventually.

FaithInfinity · 11/01/2020 22:39

I had it in my teens and have felt like I’ve had less energy since (now late 30s). Don’t assume your blood levels are fine because of the finger prick when you give blood. I went to my GP with extreme fatigue (again!) and although my haemoglobin was normal my ferritin was very low. I had a course of iron and within 2 weeks started feeling loads better! It’s worth a trip to your GP to check there’s nothing else underlying adding to your fatigue.

icedancerlenny · 11/01/2020 22:41

I had glandular fever at university when I was 21. I didn’t recover and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and ME. I got a lot better but always became poorly after a cold and had a lot of issues over the years. I’ve now got MS - showed up on a scan when I was 26 and I’m now 40. I think it was glandular fever that kicked it off and have had it since then.

SaintGarbo · 12/01/2020 07:28

@newyearagain

A cheery soul with MS Blush

The link between GF and MS is very real.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2020 07:34

@SaintGarbo I had glandular fever at 18. I was diagnosed with MS at 32. With hi sight the symptoms I had. Dated from then.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2020 07:41

I got over the GF with no issues in a couple of weeks though.

MsMarvel · 12/01/2020 13:27

When i had glandular fever i was ok-ish. Just felt really tired and had to go home for about 6 weeks. Nearly had to repeat a year at uni, but was able to move into 2nd year and complete the full 2nd year schedule plus the remaining courses i had to finish from first year. But never really felt massively ill with it other than really sore neck and cold symptoms.

FabbyChix · 12/01/2020 14:04

My son had it at age 8. Lasted a year never missed a day of school but couldn’t do any sports. No long term affects

Sirzy · 12/01/2020 14:06

I had it 20 years ago and struggle with the fatigue when run down or ill. Complete exhaustion

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 12/01/2020 15:36

I had it 13 years ago, I'm sure my glands havent been right since then.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 12/01/2020 15:38

Oh and GF knocked me for 6. Couldnt work, throat was closed up and I would sweat consistantly out of every pore, even in a air conditioned car. I have a Saturday crash without fail ever since.
