What are your children's favourite books?

Just that. I'm due in May and have pretty much all the stuff I need for a baby, but people are asking what I would like...I was thinking books! Growing up, my mom read to us every night and I'd like to carry on that tradition. The thing is, I'd love to Branch out and hear about books I haven't necessary heard of.

So what are your children's favourite books? I'm happy with board books, picture books, novels... anything!

Oliver Jeffers "Here We Are", a beautifully illustrated book, definitely a keepsake type book. It's my go to present for new babies now.

"Goodnight tractor", we loved because the little boy looked like my eldest and had every single toy that he had that we had to say goodnight too. They're are lots of different versions now, pirate, princess etc.

Similarly we like "dinosaur dig" really good illustrations of dinosaurs building so good for kids who like dinosaur and diggers! Again lots of new ones with dinosaurs getting up to other stuff.

I also liked "marmaduke the very different dragon" for a different take on princesses and to help with friendship issues.

"Where's my teddy" is a good rhyming book that will help when learning to read too.

Hattie peck, the dawn chorus, harry and the jaggedy daggers, the witch and the dinosaur are all individual books that I remember liking to read (and believe me you need to like them as you'll have to read their favourites over and over!)

meg and mog, julia Donaldson, beatrix potter, Oliver jeffers are all good as others have said

Kipper books (Mick Inkpen)
Mog the cat books Judith Kerr
Tiger Who Came To Tea (my absolute favourite ever)

My dc are older and have slightly unusual tastes, mostly due to me collecting children's books so we have a lot of older books around.

DD1's ultimate favourite book from about age 11yo is Watership Down. Before that it was probably the Cherub series, or possibly the Roman Mysteries.
DD2's favourite is Problem for the Chalet School or one of Gwendolyn Courtney books, probably Coronet for Cathy.
Ds total favourite is Mystery at Witchend by Malcolm Saville. Closely followed by Cue for Treason (Geoffrey Trease) and Storm Ahead (Monica Edwards)

Onemorefortheroad · 11/01/2020 22:30

Julia Donaldson - our fav is Monkey Puzzle
Little Mouse - Alison Murray
Rhinos don't eat pancakes - Anna Kemp

Are ones which stick out as favourites!

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 11/01/2020 22:32

DS2 doesn't really read, DD reads the Warrior Cats series exclusively.

The first ones my boys get into when they were babies were the 'that's not my...' and 'never touch a....' books, and Dear Zoo.
Then the Tony Mitton and Ant Parker vehicle series. Now at age 2 and 3 they love the Pig the Pug series, the Cranky Bear series, and Bonnie and Ben (Good Night, Sleep Tight' and 'Bonnie and Ben Rhyme Again').
I like all the above too as they are fun to read, you end up reading them a lot so it's important you like them too!

One mole digging a hole and chocolate mousse for greedy goose are lovely rhyming books for little ones.

Even when mine were in utero and babies I started buying nice copies of my old favourites and many christening presents I have bought are nicely bound copies of old classics. We are just getting in to using them now my dc are older. It nice to start a library up for children

RightOnTheEdge · 12/01/2020 14:25

The Oi Frog series has been very popular in my house.
Also most things by Julia Donaldson.
They loved Green Eggs and Ham. That was well read.

A brilliant book that we all loved and read over and over was a book called Oh no George! It's very funny and cute.

IggyAce · 12/01/2020 14:25

The Gruafflo
Each Peach Pear Plum
The Dinosaur that Pooped series
Dear Zoo
Jolly Postman
Dear Santa
