Help me find somewhere lovely to take DP for his birthday in the west country

I'd like to take DP away somewhere nice as a treat for his birthday. I'm thinking of something like a cosy pub with rooms or a comfy B&B, & somewhere that we can have a pretty lazy weekend but with a few interesting places to mooch around. (We had a weekend in Cardiff mostly visiting friends but spent a day at the Museum of Welsh Life for example which I know he liked.)

It needs to be reasonably accessible from SW Wales, so I was thinking potentially somewhere like Hereford, Malvern, Cheltenham, but open to any suggestions - whether for locations or even better specific places to stay :)

The Cotford Hotel in Malvern is cosy and has a great restaurant if you want a special meal one night . Also stayed in the Corswold Grange in Cheltenham last year which was lovely and walking distance of the town centre . Also has a good bar, lounge and restaurant.

bluebellation · 11/01/2020 16:12

Cotswold Grange, that should say.

How about Bath? Gorgeous walks, lovely pubs, shopping....

SproutMuncher · 11/01/2020 16:15

I would suggest The Painswick (in Painswick!) Lovely homely and comfy but also quite posh hotel. Has a very nice restaurant, and lots of walks you can do. There isn’t a museum nearby that I know of I’m afraid but lots of nice cotswolds towns and villages you can visit.

The Feathers in Ludlow has just reopened; we've not been back yet but it looks lovely. Plenty of wandering around to be done in Ludlow itself including the castle, river and the whole foodie scene. There's also a restaurant with rooms at Luslow Food Centre, although I can't remember the name... maybe The Clive. Hereford itself is great, but I haven't stayed there for years as it's a day trip for us. If you could drag yourself as far as Shipston-on-Stour, you'd be on the edge of the Cotswolds. The George there has good rooms and interesting food.

I'd wondered about Bath Goodnightjude - any particular suggestions of places to stay?

Is Malvern mostly a mooch about the town centre sort of place? DPs birthday is end Feb, so walking / outdoorsy stuff that we'd usually do can't be relied on

The Porlock Weir hotel, they have a lovely restaurant, there are other inns and pubs there you can stay in too and if you like walking you can walk from Porlock Weir to Culbone Church (no roads and no cars to this lovely place it's by foot only) on the south west coast path. Lovely.

Ludlow sounds nice - never been there so a plus for me.

Should say, DP would definitely like a pub with rooms best, I would really like a (large) bath in the bathroom :)

I’ve stayed in the Macdonald Bath Spa before. It was lovely. Really nice pool, Spa and gym. In walking distance to centre of Bath and the Roman Baths/Bath Abbey.
I’m sure there are loads of lovely B&B’s around too. My mum used to live in that area and I used to really love visiting her there.

Sadik · 11/01/2020 16:26

Porlock weir looks lovely, but I think a bit too far for a weekend for us sadly.

DP's definitely more a pub than a spa and gym kind of chap Grin But you're right, bound to be nice places I could find to stay (with large baths!)

If you come to Worcester then it's close to both Malvern and Ludlow and Cheltenham. There is a great pub in town called the Cardinals Hat which does rooms, it's the oldest pub in Worcester and has some fab history.

maleficent53 · 11/01/2020 16:32

Felin Fach Griffin fabulous pub with rooms and great food

maleficent53 · 11/01/2020 16:35

Sorry just realised you wanted the west country the above is near Hay on Wye

Sadik · 11/01/2020 16:37

I'm also happy for good suggestions in Wales :) Hay on Wye would probably be more my choice than DP's though, so might save that one for the other end of the year and my birthday!

The Cardinal's Hat looks lovely Moonlight :)

Plenty of other great pubs and good places to visit nearby Smile not that I'm biased of course!

Sn0tnose · 11/01/2020 21:58

The Quayside hotel in Brixham or the Bear Hotel in Cowbridge are both lovely. Nothing hugely fancy, but comfortable and cosy.

HelloDulling · 11/01/2020 22:01

The Pig, near Bath, is lovely.

HelloDulling · 11/01/2020 22:02

The Hardwick, Abergavenny, is fab, but not much to do round there on a bad weather day.

HelloDulling · 11/01/2020 22:04

Would you drive to Oxfordshire? Woodstock is lovely, about 2hrs from Cardiff. I stayed at the Kings Arms (or Head?!) last year, was gorgeous. And a bus stop outside to head into Oxford for a day.

HelloDulling · 11/01/2020 22:06

Or, head west to Newport Pembs and stay at Llys Meddyg. Is LOVELY, and they often have good deal in Jan/Feb.

Sadik · 11/01/2020 22:12

So many options! (One of which is in my home town Grin ) Oxford is a nice idea, haven't been there for years. I think I'm inclining towards Worcester & the Cardinal's Hat right now (mainly because of the lovely looking bathrooms I must admit, plus I reckon DP would love a box bed which one of the rooms has )

We stayed in a beautiful b and b on malvern hill near Cheltenham. We went one way for cotswolds and walked from house on cotswold way.
