Any dentists? What is this lump in my mouth?

And will it stop me getting my wisdom tooth extracted on Wednesday?

History - have had tenderness in upper back molars one side for more than 3 months now. At one point it changed from sensitivity to excruciating pain, I went to the dentist who couldn’t see anything particularly wrong but it then resolved when I came down with a cold a few days later so I think was my sinuses.

Then a few days after this subsided (about 8 weeks ago) I had a sudden pain on biting in the same area and this sort of niggled on for a few weeks and the gum above it became sore. Pain now isolated to wisdom tooth on that side. I went back to the same dentist who again couldn’t see anything wrong either with examination or X-ray, but offered me the choice of either giving it a good clean or just having extracted. Because I’m fed up of it now I chose the latter, appointment booked for the next time I had childcare which is this Wednesday.

This was about a week ago, and since then I seem to have grown a lump in the gum above this tooth - it’s tender but not excruciating, nor particularly red. What is it and do I need to let my dentist know before I go in to have the tooth removed?

It could be an abscess - let them know as you may need antibiotics before extraction

Looks like when my son had an abscess. I’d contact your dentist asap.

Ah crap. Thanks, I’d assumed an abscess would be really red and painful. Will give the dentist a call when they open - typical it’s a Saturday!

NHS is amazing, within 3 hours I’ve seen an out of hours dentist and got a prescription for antibiotics - it is an abscess. If I hadn’t gone I probably couldn’t have had the extraction on weds and rescheduling would be a real pain so thanks for the nudge. Pregnancy really wrecked my teeth!
