What does your five year old sleep?

Mine is usually asleep around 7.30/8pm but always up 5.30/6am Confused She sleeps longer if she’s in our bed but we already have a smaller interloper in there so we try not to let it happen too often. She seems happy enough but I do wonder if she’s getting enough sleep for her age. I know all kids are different. Guess I’m just interested in what other kids do and any tips to get her to stay in her bed longer!

At 5, mine slept from 6:30-7:30. They we're always big sleepers though and still are. I remember their bedtime changing from 7 to 6:30 as they started reception and were utterly exhausted.

notaregularmom · 10/01/2020 15:02

My 5yo goes to bed 7:30-8 her sister's 3 and goes to bed at 6:30-7 so gives me an hour to do home work with her and have a bit of ya time. My girls were waking up in the night as they shared a double bed. Their bunk beds went up Monday as a far they both slept through the night.

happypotamus · 10/01/2020 15:03

My 5 year old goes to sleep between 8.30 and 9, is woken up at 7am for school and wakes up any time between 6 and 9am if it isn't a school day. I know she isn't getting enough sleep, but I can't get her to go to sleep earlier. She has always been my non-sleeping wonderchild, and being asleep by 9pm is an improvement for her compared to a year or so ago. Bizarrely, she never gets out of bed when she wakes up, she just sits there and calls us whether it is morning or the middle of the night.

Goes to bed between 7:30 and 8pm. Wakes up anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30

stripeypillowcase · 10/01/2020 15:08

dc1 at 5 would sleep 8-8
dc2 at that age 9 (or later) - 7

RiddleyW · 10/01/2020 15:09

About 7.30-6.45

Lipperfromchipper · 10/01/2020 15:10

7 to 7 mostly

LER83 · 10/01/2020 16:04

My 4yr old, 5 in August, ds usually goes to sleep at about 8pm and is up anytime between 6&7am. This is the time schedule he has set himself, and even if we put him to bed at 7, he wont actually sleep until 8.

Eminybob · 10/01/2020 16:10

I’d say 7.30-6.30 on average, but we go through phases of earlier or later awakenings.

PumpkinParent · 10/01/2020 16:18

Our boy has just turned 5, lights out by 7.30pm latest (although he sometimes puts himself to bed as early as 6.30pm), goes straight to sleep as far as I can tell, wakes up any time from 6.15am. He’s worn out most days from Reception.

LoisLittsLover · 10/01/2020 16:22

7:30 til 7am, later at weekends. She isn't allowed to disturb us until her gro clock sun comes up which is 7 durung the week and 8 at weekends

PurpleCrazyHorse · 10/01/2020 16:32

6:30/7pm to 5:30/6am. We're up at 6:15am anyway as the kids need to be at breakfast club at 7:30am

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/01/2020 16:47

6yo bed by 8pm, gets up at 7.30 for school. Bedtime was 7-7.30 last year, but needed to be up at 7am for school.

Her sister had a 6.30pm bedtime at that age but needed to be up at 6.30am at the latest for school (which started at 7.20)

SamsMumsCateracts · 10/01/2020 16:58

We're very lucky as ours loves his sleep. He's asleep by 7.30 and has to be woken at 7 for school, but at the weekends will sleep in until gone 8 if we let him. Our 7yo on the other hand seems to be allergic to sleep. He can't switch off and it can be anywhere up to 10.30 before he finally drops off despite going to bed at the same time as DS5, and he wakes at 6.30/7, regardless of what time he fell asleep.

Lolly86 · 10/01/2020 17:01

6 year old DD but has been pretty much the same for last 2 years...
Asleep 6.30/7 awake 5/6am. Always early riser no matter what time she goes to bed

pastaparadise · 10/01/2020 17:05

8pm ish til 7am. Though some nights he'll conk out earlier at 7pm. His 3 yr old brother sleeps less...

Thatmustbemyname · 10/01/2020 17:14

@PumpkinParent slight tangent, but what does your 5yr old do until lights out? We're trying to get our (almost) 5 Yr old to go to bed/sleep independently and so far the only thing he's been willing to try is listening to an audio book. Early days and it's ok, but would like to look at other ideas for when the novelty wears off!

He's still not able to read properly on his own, and isn't interested in just playing with toys on his own at night.

OP He generally sleeps from around 6.30/7.00, until 6.00/6.30. He's a child that loves his sleep!

singtanana · 10/01/2020 17:15

lolly86 they must be kindred spirits! Late nights make no difference to the get up time.

Thanks everyone for the info, maybe I’ve just got an early riser.

DS is 6 but he's slept 10 hours a night since he was 3. He wasn't much of a napper either.

NewNameChange2020 · 10/01/2020 17:53

Usually about 8 til 7.30 if woken for school. Weekends he'll wake naturally around 8. Over the holidays he slept in some days til 8.30/9 which was bliss! He didn't sleep at all for his first 2 years so I like to think he's catching up.

IamChipmunk · 10/01/2020 18:04

Asleep by 7.30/7.45 up around 6.30.
He has never needed as much sleep as he is supposed to even as a baby.

ritzbiscuits · 10/01/2020 18:08

Son just 6 is in bed post story at 8am and usually up about 6.30/7am.

He went through a period of waking at 6am and we bought him a Star Wars Lego clock. Told him he was only allowed to get up at 7am and it generally worked. You could try something like that and a reward chart to encourage her?

TeaAndBisquits · 10/01/2020 18:35

Our 5 year old usually goes up between 7.30-8 and wakes up around 7-7.30.

Poetryinaction · 10/01/2020 19:21

6 year old sleeps 8.30-7.30
4 year old sleeps 9-7
2 year old sleeps 8-7

The 4 year old has always needed the least sleep.
