Desmopressin for bedwetting

I think the time may have come to start to consider this drug for our DS7. We have been really reluctant to consider giving any type of drug to our little boy but this is getting ridiculous and he needs help.

We have tried everything the nurses / doctor has suggested (and other things besides) but nothing works. He wets every night.

The only thing we decided against trying was an alarm because he sleeps very deeply, a bomb could go off and he would still be snoring.

Has anyone had any experience of this drug? Did it work? How long did your child have to take it? Were there any side effects?

I have / will be reading and researching but I would like some personal experiences if I can, to make an informed choice.

Any advice would be welcome

TIA

It made zero difference for dd when she was prescribed it.
Alarms she slept through.

She was finally dry when she was ready to be... at the age of 13! She was mortified.

I was dead against this medication as it can put a strain on the kidneys. I read around and found that in some parts of the country they don't even treat bed wetting until puberty as the hormone changes around that time sort it out. This luckily, and finally, seemed to be the case for my daughter at age 11. She managed with pull ups and I know it is quite common, and she understood this too. I am pleased we didn't use the medication as I also didn't trust her not to drink when taking it, as you're not meant to drink too much with it.

Another one reading with interest.

DS is 6 and wets most nights. He is still in pull-ups, but he's getting fed up of the situation. He has a Beavers trip coming up and is feeling anxious about it (I have said I'll buy him some reusables for the trip which look like pants so his friends won't know). But I wonder whether the GP would prescribe desmopressin just for the trip.

DS 12 took it for a year it was hit and miss. They’ve tried another drug but that too is the same, it’s fraustrating as he was dry in the day when he was 2 just the nighttime he can’t get past. Dd 7 only just stopped this past summer,

Hello all, just catching up with the thread.

Thank you to everyone for contributing. Hearing your stories and advice and thoughts have really helped, and made it not such a big thing in my head.

We have gone back to the pull ups. Much relief in the payingfortime household. I threw out the old bedding, which was getting threadbare from all the washing and he got to chose his new duvet covers which he was very pleased with.

So, pull ups until the appointment in Feb, and perhaps medication from there, depending on what they advise.

We tried desmopressin and alarms and nothing really worked. This went on daily till he went on a 5 day school residential trip in year 7. He was armed with pull ups and a plan to get changed discretely and dispose of pads.

He came home with all the pads unused and has never had an accident since. I guess something deep inside his brain must have finally kicked in at the prospect of a residential trip!
