30 for 30

Bobbiepin · 09/01/2020 18:48

Its ny 30th birthday in a few months and I'd like to mark the occasion by doing something good for the world - I was thinking 30 acts of kindness for my 30 years. At the moment I have NO idea how I'll fund it so looking for some inexpensive ideas.

So far I have:

  1. Comforter toys for NICU & SCBU babies at local hospital
  2. Homemade cakes for emergency service workers (if they'll eat homemade)
  3. Donate sanitary products and treats to food bank
  4. Donate baby clothes to children's centre
  5. Buy vaccinations for kids abroad
  6. Give some of my dd's old clothes to a student of mine who is pregnant.

Any other ideas?

Maybe some sort of volunteering?

AuntieStella · 09/01/2020 18:57

Donate 30 books (cheap from The Book People, if you've none to declutter) to a local primary school

Volunteer at your local Parkrun

Cash donation to Wateraid, in the hope that the next 30 years will see every person in the world with clean water and basic sanitation

Go plogging

Find a random person running VLM (or doing some other big event) and donate anonymously

Give 30 tims of pet food to a local shelter

EdithWeston · 09/01/2020 19:03

Lovely idea!

Write some letters to people who have touched your life probably positively, just to tell them that it mattered and you still remember.

Bobbiepin · 09/01/2020 19:11

@moonsmarshmellow unfortunately I'm even more time poor than I am money poor!

I can do parkrun, and the letters are a great idea. What's plugging?

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 09/01/2020 19:14

Plogging is a cross between litter picking and jogging. You get to go for a (usually extremely undemanding) run with other community minded people, and litter-pick the area whilst you do it. You can usually find local events if you search online

Sunnytimesahead · 09/01/2020 19:21

This is a lovely idea. I hope you will also be spoilt a bit by your family & friends though!
If you type in 'random acts of kindness' on Google loads of ideas come up.
Many happy returns for your 30th.

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/01/2020 19:52

Donate old books/ dvds to a hospital or care home (not sure re infection control on general wards but mental health wards happily accept donations)
Donate old clothes to charity.
Donate any food you won’t eat via olio or similar
Make your garden wildlife/ eco friendly

BournvilleGreen · 09/01/2020 20:01

Plant a tree/trees

Bobbiepin · 09/01/2020 21:24

Planting trees is definitely a great idea, it's on the list. Pretty sure I could stock a few wards with books I have tucked away.

Give blood
Donate old blankets/bedding to an animal shelter
Give a cup of tea to a homeless person
Volunteer at a food bank

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/01/2020 21:43

Volunteer every week for 30 weeks

PawPawNoodle · 09/01/2020 21:45

Take a homeless person for a decent meal.

2020BetterBeBetter · 09/01/2020 21:50

Such a lovely idea and I hope you have a wonderful 30th birthday.

I don’t think your NICU/SCBU will accept comforters due to hygiene risks unless the baby is dying. I just wanted to say that my baby did die in hospital and we were given matching teddy bears, and for our other children, which are so treasured and mean so so much - so perhaps you could do similar for the bereaved parents and families?

Bobbiepin · 09/01/2020 21:57

@2020BetterBeBetter I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope 2020 will be better for you, and thank you for the advice. Would donating pairs of teddy's be ok or is it better to go through somewhere like aching arms?

I give blood when I'm able to and buy a hot drink and food for homeless people when I have the money. I'll sit with them for a while and chat sometimes too.

Can you knit or crochet? If so what about making 30 squares for Woolly Hugs?

2020BetterBeBetter · 09/01/2020 22:11

Thank you. I’m sure you contact the hospital and ask them for advice. It could be they already receive some things from 4Louis or SANDS but there are other things they need - I was also really kindly given a bag of toiletries etc as I had only gone in for a check up and didn’t have anything with me when the doctor said I had to have an EMCS. As numb as I was at the time, there was so much kindness thanks to multiple people and charities and it made the awful blur so much gentler.

iVampire · 10/01/2020 09:22

I see you are already a blood donor

How about signing up to the bone marrow registry as well?

busyweeks78 · 10/01/2020 14:12

Post pals it’s a charity where you can send positive mail/small gifts to children with a disability or a life threatening illness.www.postpals.co.uk/

danni0509 · 10/01/2020 14:25

Buy a hot chocolate for a homeless person.

danni0509 · 10/01/2020 14:26

Just seen you already do regarding hot drink for homeless. (I always do this too)

Lovely idea btw.

hm246 · 10/01/2020 14:44

I love this idea Star

Bobbiepin · 10/01/2020 19:14

Thank you everyone. I love reading stories about this so I thought I'd get I'm on the action.

Post pals sounds great, I'll have a look at that.

I'm already on the bone narrow list, organ donor too. Any part of my body I don't need, someone else can make use of. I don't think they'd want my eyes or lungs though!

Bobbiepin · 07/04/2020 20:22

OK little update, 30th birthday has been and gone and I've got 8 things done. I will do letters and post PALS but not right now as its unnecessary strain on the postal service right now. Can anyone think of some lockdown friendly ideas? I'm giving blood next week which I'll add to the list, but otherwise I'm confined to the house (asthmatic and not risking going anywhere - DH is doing the shopping).

OP posts:
Shotofvodka · 07/04/2020 20:46

Send pizzas to the local ambulance/fire station? DH is a firefighter and would love this.

Shotofvodka · 07/04/2020 20:47

And I hope you had a lovely birthday. You sound like a wonderful person
