M&S blaming skinny trousers?!?

Chickenitalia · 09/01/2020 14:37

Truly read it all today. Poor sales due to men shunning skinny trousers, amongst other things including overbuying on food and poor supply chain.

Am I the only one not at all surprised? The only men I know who shop for clothing in M&S would not wear skinny trousers ever! I know there have been some dubious buying decisions recently but this one is baffling.

Surely it can’t be long before M&S hits the ropes now? (Been said before I know).

M&S changed their skinny jeggings to "their best fit ever", they are not. I used to buy a few pairs at a time as they were fab but now they're just frumpy.

I'm going to be pissed off when they stop doing every single pair of trousers at half mast 7/8 length.

It's the only way I can get full length trousers to fit me perfectly - at 5'6", their standard length are about 5 inches too long and their short ones have too short a rise to stay up. Not that there is a single pair of trousers this season that has decent pockets, belt loops and a colour/fabric that doesn't look like something dragged off the floor of a charity shop, anyhow.

And it's not as if I'm ever going to be going into the changing rooms to try them on, is it?

I think Next seem to be more on the ball about being stylish. Clothes/gifts etc. Marks just don't seem to be getting it. I like their food, underwear, socks but not a lot else really. I'm middle aged and not even stylish myself but can see that Next are better at this than Marks

On the rare occasions they produce anything decent they discontinue it or ruin improve hmm it.

They also bring out a range/item which sells out almost immediately and never bother to produce more.

I remember a cardigan modelled by Twiggy. It was sold out in days. Never came back into stock. Stupid thing was they were still showing adverts of it in their shop windows etc long after they knew none were available.

That's just one example. I can remember several more. These aren't "trendy/fashion" items that are time-sensitive - they were bog-standard basics that could be sold any year, but no, M&S didn't have the sense for another production run.

Given the closures of BHS, before them Littlewoods, and before them C&A, Marks should be raking it in. They should have placed themselves to take those markets. But no, they havn't a clue, so the likes of Primark, supermarkets etc have taken the market. Clueless management and designers.

Didiplanthis · 10/01/2020 16:10

My children have sensory issues. With their dream skin range I finally found pants they would wear... and now cant get them in the size we need. If you are going to launch products for autistic children dont bloody stop making them or make them unobtainable... autistic children and their parents cannot cope !!!! Dont do the bloody things in the first place and give us hope if you cant sustain it.

Didiplanthis · 10/01/2020 16:13

Maybe they could send one if their stock control team to my house to witness the fall out !!

MAFIL · 10/01/2020 17:15

Their older boys range of trousers is almost all skinny or super skinny too. I appreciate this is poupular at the moment, but our school doesn't allow them as uniform, which left us with very little choice for those, and neither of my boys is keen on skinny jeans as leisure wear as they say they are uncomfortable. One of them is in fact very skinny generally, but he is a serious cyclist and has thighs that wont fit in skinny jeans unless he buys a pair where the waisy and hips are too big to stay up. So we have ditched M&S for both uniform and casual clothed. I still buy socks and undies there if I happen to be passing but actually supermarket stuff is fine and a lot cheaper so I don't go out of my way to go to M&S at all these days.

@PickAChew You found an 18-year-old receipt?! Shock Grin

I loved their skirts too, circa 2004-ish. I had two amazing ones that I wish I still had.

I just hope to god that Simply Food is still going when I head back in summer

I'd used it as a bookmark, sally

It fell out when I was sorting through a load of sheet music and stuff!

SallyLovesCheese · 10/01/2020 19:58

Oh, fab, I love blasts from the past like that! I once found a train ticket from about ten years ago being used as a bookmark. I've no idea why I was travelling, though!

But...you used a bookmark in some sheet music?! I normally use those thin post-its or even naughtily fold the corner!

pinkpolo · 10/01/2020 20:02

I haven't shopped in M&S for years. Sick of every single top/shirt/jumper barely covering my bellybutton as they are so bloody short 😡

The last two bras I bought from there broke in a matter of weeks. One was an expensive sports bra (metal hook on the back stretched out/unravelled!) and the underwire on the other nearly give me an unwanted piercing.

The tights last one wear each, as they shrink in the wash.

I take my hard earned cash elsewhere.

AutumnCrow · 10/01/2020 22:01

I feel I need a luminol light to shop in M&S clothes departments. Such gross stories about bodily emissions designed to upset women.

Although actually I just won't bother shopping in M&S. Sounds like the whole place is a biohazard.

Dementedmagpie · 10/01/2020 22:02

Interesting that I've been following this thread as I was given some m and s slippers for xmas.i didnt wear them straight away, so started wearing about a week ago....and now the stitching has come unravelled and they have come apart. they weren't especially cheap (£19.50) so will take back tomorrow.....but not sure I trust another pair!!

rockingthelook · 10/01/2020 22:05

I do still like Marks, I like the fact that I can buy shoes in half size, but still a bit pricey, £65 for a pair of lace up brogues for work!I've got a couple of nice winter skirts, the jumpers not so good though, like the tummy control tights, underwear expensive though, far too products in the beauty area, jewellery tacky and overpriced

Ibloodylovewomen · 10/01/2020 22:22

Seeing the detailed "reviews" of women's underwear left by male fetishists on the m&s website turned by stomach. The fact that m&s approve these posts, and have ignored women's concerns about changing next to males in their 'gender neutral' dressing rooms has made me never want to shop with them again. They've prioritised autogenophiles over their female customer base, so I won't be giving them any more of my money.

HeavilyCaffeinatedHannah · 10/01/2020 22:59

M&S should stick to what they do well: the quality, classic wardrobe basics of nice undies, good t-shirt and ordinary trousers. They can't seem to get it right with fashion. They never seem to.

borntobequiet · 11/01/2020 14:56

When M&S did things properly. 50% wool 50% acrylic, but feels like merino. Bought secondhand (charity shop) at least 15 years ago. Wear it every year, not a lot, but a few times. Washes and dries easily. Fabulous cut.
Cat slept on it for nearly a year after I moved house but didn’t seem to do it any harm.

I bought a suit from them for interview had it a year and worn for 6 interviews. Terminal bobbling between the legs, it’s only has about 15 hour of wear tops. I’ve given up with them on the grounds it’s bad for the planet.
Food wise I’ve also given up because their staff have a special ability to be exceptionally rude to customers. Never had a disagreement with Aldi or Tesco staff, I’m into double figures with M&S staff and I only do an occasional shop there.

Listomania · 11/01/2020 15:42

It's absolutely nothing to do with skinny trousers, more that they seem to have no interest in selling anything. This is the saga of a bed that I bought and am probably going to cancel:

Saw a bed in a branch in the sale. When I got home, I tried to order it online but found that it wasn't in the sale.

Used their 'chat' facility to find out why. I received a response that their prices can vary. I tweeted them and found out that this wasn't the case. They told me to go back to the branch and ask why the prices were different.

I went back. There was no one available on the furniture desk. I was told that he had gone to tea. They were not sure when he would be back.

I returned 45 minutes later. They agreed to sell me the bed at the reduced price on the label. I asked whether the bed would be assembled and was told that it would - even that I should supervise this process!

Have looked at the website and can see that it is sold as self-assembly - and not included in the models which are assembled by the delivery team. I now don't want the bed.

This can't be unique to me. You could probably multiply this poor service many times each day and not need to blame the poor results on skinny trousers.
