Seville oranges

I believe Seville oranges are in season at the moment and I'd love to have a go at making marmalade.

Where can I find them? Our local market stall didn't have any...

They are seasonal , should be in the shops in about a month .

FeministFish · 08/01/2020 16:18

Ah, I thought the season was Dec-Jan. Thanks.

Start looking now, it's usually the first half of January that they appear. My local Sainsbury's stocked them last year - you could try the other large supermarkets too.
Home made Seville orange marmalade is delicious!

I shall make a supermarket pilgrimage later this week and report back!

Ocado/Waitrose had them a couple of days ago. That's where I get mine every year. Do you have a killer recipe? Because if you don't have one handed down from Great Grandma, Felicity Cloake's Perfect Orange Marmalade recipe is a winner. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2011/jan/20/how-make-perfect-orange-marmalade

Ah, perfect. Thanks. Now I have to go downstairs and make a marmalade sandwich with last years goods.

Melroses · 08/01/2020 20:38

I got a box in Waitrose last week.

Love Felicity Cloacke Grin I usually use Delia - but off to look at FC's now.

Marmalade bread and butter pudding is brilliant - I usually use up the marmalade that didn't fit in the jars, and all the bits on saucers. Use plenty.

MCBerberLoop · 08/01/2020 21:33

Ooh I’m excited! What jars do you all use?

minipurr · 08/01/2020 22:10

I got some from my local greengrocers a few weeks ago.

Jars wise I tend to use the wider top ones because it's easier to get a spoon in to eat marmalade from a spoon as it makes it easier to fill. Wilko sell them by the 12 or you can get them on Amazon.

BBC 'ultimate Seville marmalade' recipe for me but I leave the oranges to soak overnight after boiling them to extract even more of the juicy goodness.

Melroses · 08/01/2020 22:13

I ladle the marmalade into a tall jug and pour it into the jars (variety of saved ones stored in the garage - use new lids from Lakeland) to reduce mess.

Notthebloodygym · 08/01/2020 23:38

I make perfectly good marmalade using the food processor to shred the peel.

FeministFish · 10/01/2020 21:30

Morrison's were all sold out, but I got 2kg in Tesco. Let the marmalading commence!

How many jars will I need per kg of oranges do you reckon?

OP posts:
WhoWants2Know · 10/01/2020 21:46

Depends on the size of the jar...

Last year I did 2kg and got one massive jar plus 5 medium and half a dozen mini jars.

I like to add a generous splash of Jack Daniels before it sets for a nice kick.

abitoflight · 10/01/2020 22:06

And blood orange season 😊
