Best vegetarian meat substitutes?

So as a family we have decided the eat the meet in the freezer but buy no meat (or chicken or fish) for January.

We probably had at least 4 family dinners a week which some form of meat/poultry/fish so its taking some getting used to. I've cooked lots of lentil based dishes / home made veggies burgers / veggie lasagne but I need a few more ideas to increase the variety.

We've had quorn mince and the fake southern fried chicken, but does anyone have any other recommendations? We do usually eat quite a lot of chicken (fajitas / stir fries) - are the fake chicken fillets any good?

I'd look to hear your recommendations for meat-substitute products (tend to shop at Aldi or Sainsburys).

Thank you

Shroom dogs sausages from Sainsburys are really nice. Their frozen meat balls are good too and their own brand frozen mince is better than quorn.

Coop incredible burgers are my favourite non meat beef burger.

For fajitas, I’d just leave out the meat and add extra veg.

Vivera kebab meat
Tofurkey smoked ham
Quorn cocktail sausages

Linda McCartney sausages and mozzarella burgers are really nice.

Aldi vegan sausage rolls are great too.

Other stuff my lot like include breaded and non breaded “chicken” fillets - and they like all the ham and chicken slice things for sandwiches.

Cauldron is another good brand to look out for, their sausages etc are really nice.

And you could always go to Greggs for a vegan steak bake.Grin

Other Quorn stuff, I mean.

I like the Vivera bacon pieces in things like pasta bakes. Their kebab meat is also tasty! I’ve not tried their other bits, but friends who have gone veggie or mostly veggie in similar circs to you rate it.

Agree about the shroomdogs, very tasty.

The Linda McCartney stuff tends to be quite meaty (in the freezers).

I find Tesco to have one of the best ranges (particularly in their frozen stuff) though other places seem to be catching up!

Try to think 'not meat and two veg' - I find that there are some good 'not meat' foods out there - arancini are my favourite.

Some Quorn can give some people terrible stomach ache - I think it's the chunks that are the worst culprits!

The Oomph! kebab strips are great in fajitas. They are in the freezer section and I've seen them in Tesco and Asda.

We like the quorn nuggets and the richmond meat free sausages.

The quorn hot dogs are also nice (chilled rather than frozen though).

Linda McCartney sausage rolls are amazing.

Oh, and like pp I just make veggie fajitas (with halloumi is nice if you're not aiming for plant based).

I use a lot of Tesco Soya mince - Cook up a double batch with loads of spices and tinned tomatoes with Bisto onion gravy then use it for lasagne and chilli.

Also Linda McC sausages for a sausage and bean casserole (Hairy Biker's Recipe).

Deila's Minestrone Soup without the bacon is a hearty meal with crusty bread.
