It's a big birthday coming up and DH has said to pick one of these beautiful afternoon teas in London as a treat.

They all look amazing! I can't decide!!!

(Been to Sketch, Hotel Royal)

Which would you pick?

Ooh lucky you! I would probably go for the Savoy for traditions sake but that "crowded Georgian parlour" in Marylebone is certainly eye-catching...

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 07/01/2020 22:27

Claridges every single time. DM and I have done MANY afternoon teas and Claridges is our absolute favourite, It’s a really special experience. I’ve been lucky enough to go 5 times and each time it’s been just as special

OhhEmGee · 07/01/2020 22:30

I’d also recommend Claridges. I took my mum there for afternoon tea for her birthday and we both loved it.

doadeer · 07/01/2020 22:31

Oooh thank you all.

We will have our 11m old with us, he's very easy going - it won't be a problem will it? I've never seen a highchair at a fancy place 😂

I’d go to one of the big ones - the Ritz, the Savoy, Claridges.

I’ve been to Browns and it was lovely.

katy1213 · 07/01/2020 22:40

I'd also vote for Claridges or the Connaught, traditional and classy. The Ritz is too touristy and (admittedly ages since I've been) I was crushingly disappointed by the Savoy; cakes weren't too special, and we weren't in the Thames Foyer but in some overspill basement. Like I said, ages ago - maybe it's changed - but I've never been tempted to return.

Paddy1234 · 07/01/2020 22:42

No competition- Claridges all the way!

katy1213 · 07/01/2020 22:44

But leave the baby at home. I'd be livid if I went out for such an expensive treat and ended up at the table next to someone's else's kid. Time and a place - and this is not it!

Haworthia · 07/01/2020 22:45

I agree with @katy1213 about the baby.

Afternoons teas are so quiet and sedate, with lovely music playing. No one wants a bored baby nearby.

Expressedways · 07/01/2020 22:46

The Zetter is my favourite but only if you appreciate a (very strong) drink and perhaps not with a baby. Otherwise Browns or Claridges.

Rosehipbubbles · 07/01/2020 22:48

Is there no one who could have the baby - or walk him for a few hours from the hotel? I can't think of many 11 month olds that can be relied on to fail safe sleep or be entertained for a couple of hours. If I were next to you my heart would sink tbh - I have 2 myself. There is a £40 children's menu at Claridges - you would need to check if they will charge for the baby.

maloofhoof · 07/01/2020 22:53

I've done Claridges, Savoy, Ritz, Dorchester and Oblix. Claridges and Savoy were my favourites, then Oblix, just for the view. Least favourite was the Ritz, both times it was crammed with too many tables, and all the those surrounding tables were filled with people taking selfies throughout.

kitk · 07/01/2020 22:55

Ive only been to the Langham off that list but it was exceptional!

SellMySoulForMoreSleep · 07/01/2020 23:03

Another vote for the zetter townhouse - it's amazing!

Normandy144 · 07/01/2020 23:07

Claridges hands down fantastic. A real treat.

ElizaCBennett · 08/01/2020 00:05

Claridges was absolutely brilliant!

Verite1 · 08/01/2020 00:21

I haven’t read the list or the answers because the answer is Claridges. The answer is always Claridges.

Verite1 · 08/01/2020 00:23

Have now read the thread. I wouldn’t take an 11 month old to Claridges for afternoon tea due to risk of spoiling it for others.

raspberrymolakoff · 08/01/2020 00:31

I've done several of them and my favourite is Brown's hotel. It's also buzzing and lively so if you did have to take the baby it might not be disruptive. We have taken a 5 year old. Some of the others are quite hushed. The tea itself is also excellent at Brown's.

diydisaster · 08/01/2020 01:10

I know people who have taken young children to the savoy if that helps.

doadeer · 08/01/2020 06:44

Thanks everyone. We don't have anyone I could leave DS with but honestly he's such a sweet baby he won't be disruptive for anyone. We go out a lot with him and have never had him be loud or upset he just smiles at everyone. And if that was the case DH would take him out straight away. I would never not be respectful of other people.

Another vote for Claridges

caperplips · 08/01/2020 09:45

I would pick Claridges. But the Zetter Town House has caught my fancy and I could be tempted by that next time!

doadeer · 08/01/2020 09:49

Yes that's the thing... Do I go with one of the classics or a new one? The one with Anthony Gormley designs looks amazing!
