Baby grunting at night

DS is 4 weeks old and exclusively bf at the minute. After most feeds he seems really uncomfortable and has to be kept upright. In the night he feeds at least every two hours so keeping him upright for a long period is exhausting and often wakes him up. By the time I get him back to sleep it's almost time for his next feed. Even then he is still grunting really loudly stopping me from sleeping.
Has others experienced similar? Any advice or what the cause was? I did wonder reflux or possibly trapped wind as I think my let down is too fast for him. If it is my let down I know expressing first may help but this is hard during the night when I don't know exactly when he will wake. We have been using infocol the last couple of weeks and I'm going to try Gripe water tonight.
Any advice appreciated I'm exhausted thanks!

I think thats normal all mine grunted when they were asleep as newborns. They sounded like snuffling pigs!

Take him to the GP to be checked.

You have my sympathy OP, DS was like this and it was exhausting. He would grunt really loudly from about 3am ever night. It turned out to be reflux which gaviscon and rantitadine didn't touch.

We were eventually prescribed lansoprazole which was brilliant and made sure to burp him really well after every feed as I also had a strong let down and he gulped a lot of air.

Hi OP, I have dealings with neonates through work. It sounds like possibly silent reflux if he's not vomiting. However, has it got worse since he was born or does he have any other symptoms, like flaring nostrils, rapid breathing etc? If he has, then it would be a good idea to get him checked over by a healthcare professional.

I could have written this exact post 4 week old dd is asleep on me now. She is such a grunter! I spoke to the midwife today and she said it's most likely still wind. You can stop the gulping a bit by leaning back when they latch so that it's not pouring into their mouth. I'm woken every night by grunting!
