Falling asleep while driving

Not as dramatic as it sounds, maybe, but DH just said he's been close to starting to nod off during his morning commute which terrifies me. Hes clearly worried himself.

We have good sleep habits, early bedtime, no booze. He walks the dog in the morning and has breakfast and a shower so he's not rolling out of bed without any fresh air etc. He sometimes has trouble sleeping, work stress etc but nothing drastic. No crying babies or anything here, most people probably get less sleep!

It's a long, motorway drive, an hour plus. He works from home a couple of days already. Not on any medication, otherwise fit and well.

Apart from windows down, music on what else should he do? All the Google advice is for a long journey when you're tired, not an AM regular trip!

Is it worth any blood tests or something? Iron levels maybe. I'd hate not to take it seriously... Sad

Have you thought about sleep apnoea?

Likethebattle · 07/01/2020 19:50

DH said the same this morning. I’m making him a travel mug with coffee tomorrow.

Parkandride · 07/01/2020 19:58

I'll have to have a read @BernardoTeashop I thought that was something quite severe!? He seems ok in the night

Perhaps it's the time of year @Likethebattle good idea though. I'm out the door way before him so I can't be as kind as you!

@parkandride I’m out twenty minutes before him but it’ll be ready and stay warm in the cup.

My dh had this once. It was the exhaust fumes on his van blowing in via a very small split in a hose somewhere (sure there's a technical term for how it happened). Get a portable carbon monoxide detector and take it in the car just to check.

PoptartPoptart · 07/01/2020 20:27

Does it only happen when he is driving op? What about the days he works from home - does he feel the same level of sleepiness at that time in the morning?
If yes, then maybe a trip to the GP would be sensible just to get checked out.
If it’s only when driving then maybe it is something to do with the car like a pop suggested

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/01/2020 20:29

Does he have the heating on? That sends me right off to sleep, once I have the car warmed and defogged I have to turn it down to almost chilly. Something interesting on the radio too, a good podcast or something. Failing that start night shifts I slap myself regularly.

My mum felt she was falling asleep whilst driving and turned out to be sleep apnoea. Worth a look but beware if they do investigate he may be stopped from driving while they do. Hope it’s something more simple
