Night sweats

Hi, I’ve been having terrible night sweats for quite a few months now. It doesn’t seem to matter if I leave the window open or wear very loose and summery pyjamas, I still have them and I wake up soaking. I get them quite a few times a week and it’s really starting to interrupt my sleep. I was just wondering if anyone else has them and if so if you have any tips about how to deal with them x

Btw- should probably say that I had my hormones checked a while back and they were all normal

I get them and it all depends on age. I had them after dc born (apparently it's hormonal plus exhaustion?) and then again starting a few years ago. GP suggested Prozac as apparently it cuts night sweats. It worked.

@nibdedibble that might be worth a try- i’d never have thought of Prozac!

GP told me it's not an approved use of it but it works, so I went for it.

It also lifted my mood which I didn't realise was actually quite down. I'm still taking it...which may or may not be a good thing, I don't know!

I had them until I starting treatment for sleep apnea, which got rid of them.

LongGinShortTonic · 07/01/2020 11:06

I go through stages of having them. Also had my hormones checked and all normal! No help really, but you’re not alone.

PityParty4one · 07/01/2020 11:10

My GP also said my hormones were normal and it couldn't be peri menopausal Hmm he also put me on antidepressants which was stupid because 1 I am not depressed and 2 they gave me insomnia!!

In the end I asked to see a different GP who listed all of my symptoms and agreed that despite the hormone test saying normal I had all the signs of menopause and prescribed me HRT.
Changed my life.
I was affected not only by night sweats but increased anxiety very low mood fuzzy/scatty head and a not give a fuck i dont care attitude to life.
9 months later I am back to my normal self.

nibdedibble · 07/01/2020 11:21

@pityparty4one That's me as well but my GP won't give me HRT until my periods show signs of irregularity...sadly they are normal. Bah.

confused202 · 07/01/2020 11:44

@PityParty4one you sound very like me! My periods are very irregular (I do still have them though) so I worried that it could be the early menopause. I have quite big mood swings too and definitely noticed a ‘change’ as such.

Best advice I got was from here.

Do not let them fob you off!

The first GP was a young male the second was a 40s female. I would hate to say their sex and age made a difference but I believe it did.

I know my body and I knew the symptoms I was having but 1st GP said basically they are not bad enough to warrant HRTdeal with it.
The 2nd cared and asked how it was affecting my life. That was enough for her.

I know this sounds dramatic but the symptoms were ruining my life.
I was losing sleep, couldn't concentrate at work and my relationships suffered because I was irrationally angry all the time or anxious to the point where I thought I was losing my mind.

Like others have said don't let the doctors fob you off , i still gave regular periods and i started on HRT 5 years ago , i feel lots better now . I also have sleeping tablets on standby if a have a few bad nights sleep , my doctors refuse to prescribe them so i get them from an online chemist , i find knowing i have them helps me sleep better than not being able to have them if that makes sense .
