What is a "carton"?

If asked I would have said a carton is a tetrapak. But have ust received a letter from our local council about recycling from March they'll now saying that we can recycle "cartons" and they should be put into one of the 5 bins/containers/bags for recycling (which one is not yet clear) that they are going to provide next month. But when I go onto the council website its says they don't recycle tetrapaks so what on earth is a "carton".
We are currently recycling plastic in one container, card board in another bottles metal and newspaper in another and everything else including tetrapaks into the main wheely bin.

Maybe the website has the old info and they haven't updated it yet about cartons/tetrapack. I would agree with you as to what a carton would be

Elouera · 06/01/2020 19:50

hhmm, I also would have thought a tetrapack was a carton, but I know these can be lined in plastic. I would also consider a carton as being a cardboard box like a chocolate box, amazon box or cigarette carton (I don't even smoke but those large boxes people buy duty free).
Our council often throw our carefully washed and sorted recycling bags into the regular waste, so don't get me started on recycling!

happygardening · 06/01/2020 19:51

The website has been recently updated it says we should now separate metal glass and newspaper but the leaflet says not until March! But your probably right they're probably just not updated it properly.

Blimey you’ve got a lot of bins.
Maybe the website hasn’t been updated yet.
I would of thought like you a fresh juice carton or some milk comes in these.

happygardening · 06/01/2020 19:54

I'm under no illusions Im surety all of it lot goes to landfill. I have a dairy free diet so generate a lot of tetrapaks 200 every few months so I drive them to tetrapak recycling place (not sure why I bother really).

We have 4 big wheely bins.

  • General waste
  • Paper/card/cardboard
  • Mixed recycling (glass, plastic, tins, tetrapacks)
  • Garden/food

I think a carton is a large cardboard box that holds multiples of something else.

So a carton of cigarettes holds a hundred packets

A carton of tetrapacks is a box holding numerous tetrapacks.

You can recycle the box but not the tetrapacks.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 20:06

But that would have gone in the cardboard recycling that already exists

Drizzzle · 06/01/2020 20:10

I think carton is the American word for large cardboard box.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 20:11

But she already has cardboard recycling.

exexpat · 06/01/2020 20:12

We have just had a new recycling bag issued for cardboard, and the council website says that includes 'food and drink cartons' - I am pretty sure that means things like juice cartons, which are usually tetrapaks, but you should probably check, if they don't send out more detailed information before the new system starts. Does your council reply to queries on social media? Ours is pretty good about that kind of question.

exexpat · 06/01/2020 20:17

Just checked - yes, food and drink cartons specifically includes tetrapaks - see p2 of this: www.bristol.gov.uk/documents/20182/34800/waste%20and%20recycling%20leafelt%20-%20aug%202015.pdf/fac291d0-b1b5-49c6-b6b1-8bf41de41763

Chochito · 06/01/2020 20:18

I would say the typical boxes that Amazon deliveries come in would be classified as cartons.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 06/01/2020 20:19

TetraPak just a brand name of carton. Cartons are Lined with foil and often contain plastic screw lids which is why they have to be recycled using a separate specialist process (unlike cardboard)

Every ounce of waste your local council collects must be recorded and traced wether it is landfill, burnt for energy or recycled - including which manufacturer/ processing plant/ country it has been sent to. This is public record and can be easily found by searching 'waste data flow' in google

happygardening · 06/01/2020 20:21

I've never tried to contact them in social media!
My DH thinks a carton is a large cardboard box and they have increased the size of the cardboard bag currently we just put out large cardboard loose and they take it.
Just put it all out for collection tomorrow we'll have seven different bins/bags/boxes from March including the general rubbish wheely bin.

A carton is any packaging made primarily of any type of (card) board. However it can be lined or coated with a number of other materials.

happygardening · 06/01/2020 20:29

Ok just read the website again tetrapaks should technically go our "nearest" recycling centres which for us 16 miles away by car needless to say no buses/trains etc! Not very environmentally friendly, But luckily I can take them into the next county (3 miles away) and recycle them there.
