It's not vegan if you only do it for a month

Obviously plantbasedanuary isn't as catchy, but if you're only doing it for a month, you can hardly call it vegan.

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

Is this really what people are doing for January, or just eating fake meat burgers instead of real meat burgers? Before going back to eating real meat burgers in February. Unless it inspires you to continue with veganism in which case kudos to you.

Bit harsh, since no evidence OP is a vegan.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 08/01/2020 21:56

Maybe you're confusing "a holocaust" with "the Holocaust". The definition in the dictionary doesn't specify humans.

I'm aware thanks... but let's not pretend that the vast majority of people are thinking of the dictionary definition of holocaust when the word gets mentioned. If vegans really want everyone converted to the cause then I dont think comparing killing animals for food to the mass slaughter of millions of Jews is really helping.

Poor vegans. Their special thing is not so special any more.

it never was to begin with. live and let live.

To me it is a philosophy, a way of life. It just seems to have become a word to describe food not containing animal

^I completely agree with you OP. Vegan to me has always been about the whole lifestyle not just food choices.

Branleuse · 09/01/2020 17:16

Yeah but thats quite a new definition of the word. I mean, you can use the word for that, sure, but it is just a word for a diet

donquixotedelamancha · 09/01/2020 22:19

OP this post is precisely the reason why vegans are subject to so much ridicule.

That's unfair. There are lots of other reasons.

carlywurly · 09/01/2020 22:55

@Lordfrontpaw totally agree. It's harder to eat out as a vegetarian than it's been in years.

Meat replacement stuff is just nasty. And as for vegan cheese.. had the odd experience recently of not being able to eat in a vegan restaurant as everything on the menu was some variation of fake meat. Yuck.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2020 23:15

I find it amusing that some vegetarians are complaining about being "forced" to eat vegan yet on threads where meat eaters complain about being "forced" to eat vegetarian they are told to suck it up and no one needs meat.

It just raised a wry smile.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/01/2020 23:54

Not being forced to eat vegan - having veggie options made (usually rather uninspiring and bland) vegan (with revolting fake cheese/cream etc) while the numbers of carnivore options stay the same.

I recently had vegan coleslaw and it felt as if my mouth had been coated with paint. So unpleasant vegan or nothing?

ActualHornist · 10/01/2020 00:09

I agree with you but I also don’t really care.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/01/2020 07:57

If you aren’t veggie then you won’t really be bothered by it - carnivores have the same choice and vegans have more choice. Veggies are finding dairy off the menu in more and more places - with some pretty horrible ‘alternatives’ used (when there are some really nice vegan meals that don’t need some horrible tasting fake dairy).

pourmeanotherglass · 10/01/2020 17:26

@Micah 100% agree with you.

We all need to eat less meat and dairy. Some people are able to give it up completely, others find that difficult. But it is still good for them to cut down as far as they can, it isn't all or nothing. I'm a flexitarian - I eat about 95% of meals veggie or vegan, but occasionally eat fish/ meat.

If I'm going to an event where I'm being catered for, and asked my dietary requirements, Ill put veggie because that is the food I prefer to eat.if I go to a friend's house I'll eat whatever they have cooked, but would choose the veggie option if there is a choice.

I don't really like fake meat, and find beans/ lentils can make me a bit bloated if I have them every day,so couldn't really do full time vegan, but am trying to reduce meat and dairy for environment reasons.
