Teens and holidays

When did your children stop coming on holiday with you?

I was thinking of skipping a holiday this year as the bathroom needs doing and my car is 12 years old but someone commented that my DS won't want to be coming with me much longer.

He is 15 this year, I assumed he would keep coming until he goes away to uni (if he does) or is working and living independently.

We had a holdup last year 15/13/13

They were a pain!!

Made me reconsider holidays! We’ve had the floors and door replaced and bathroom retired. Looking to get a logburner this year.

I’m not sure I can face another holiday - however DD went away for a week with school, DD2 went with a friend for a week and DS couldn’t get a place so it’s his turn this year! I had a weekend away with friends and DH extended a work trip for a few days sightseeing.

There’s other ways!

Cheeseboardcriminal · 05/01/2020 21:02

DS wanted to go with school but couldn't get a place.

He is usually pretty good on holiday so far, I just hadn't really thought about him growing up and not wanting to come anymore. It surprised me although it's logical that it stops sooner or later.

Mine still come, they have a good say in where we go which I think makes a difference as I want them to enjoy it too.

How old are they @IceCreamAndCandyfloss?

That is a good idea, I always choose where we go and we haven't had a bad holiday yet but letting them have a day is not a bad idea at all.

We just came back from holiday and my kids are 14 and 16. We hope to go to Spain but I think his girlfriend will come.
I last travelled with my parents at 17, but I've also been travelling internationally on my own (the actual trip only, I went to see people I knew) at 14.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 05/01/2020 22:28

I think 17/18 is what I was expecting. The tears have just gone so fast. I know a few adults who travel with their parents but it seems to be women more than men and usually when they have their own children.

Age 20 because they were working abroad and couldn't do both. That was a blip though, they came again after that.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 05/01/2020 22:47

That's encouraging. I hate the thought that we only have 2 or 3 holidays left together.

DD will be 17 this year, she's coming with us this year, under duress, but definitely won't want to come next year. However I have said that it's important to spend time as a family and holidays are great for that and that she should come away with us for at least a week next year. I think she was persuaded but will see next year!

DS is 14 soon, he loves our holidays but wouldn't want to come without DD so not sure what we'll do when she absolutely refuses to come....

20viona · 05/01/2020 22:56

I stopped going with my parents at 16.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 05/01/2020 22:58

You never stop to realise that your days with them are numbered. That sounds dramatic I know but you just think you have forever and endless holidays and trips and cuddles.

Then they grow up Sad

Ah, suppose it will be much cheaper then though.

The last holiday DD had with us as a dependent was 16. The year after we went to Iceland while she went to Scout camp, then she went to Kavos with a friend while we celebrated our Silver later that year in Malta. Two years later we took her and her boyfriend to the Med and did separate things. She was 20 by then.

HairyFloppins · 05/01/2020 23:40

My dd is 18 and still coming with us this year. We all still like each other though at the moment Grin

exexpat · 05/01/2020 23:50

My last family holiday with my parents was when I was about 13, I think, until many years later when they were grandparents and joined us on an extended family group holiday. From 15 I went youth hostelling in summer holidays with friends (or with boyfriends from about 17) rather than family.

My DCs are now 17 and 21, and both came on holiday with me as late as last year, but they do also go off and do their own thing with friends. DS is now working and living with his girlfriend, so although I may still invite him (and girlfriend) to join me and DD in future, it may or may not happen.

I think with teenagers a lot depends on what sort of holiday it is and how much input they can have into the choice. Going somewhere they can have their own rooms and the freedom to take off by themselves for a few hours or couple of days becomes increasingly important, ie not a villa in the middle of nowhere requiring a car to get around.

discusstin · 05/01/2020 23:53

Depends who is paying.....in 2018 I paid for a Florida trip and took two sons in their twenties along with my little one.

ineedto · 05/01/2020 23:58

Ours will be 18 and 16 this year. Booked to come to Spain for a fortnight, London for a long weekend and Berlin for a week. We all genuinely like being together.

raspberryk · 06/01/2020 02:13

I stopped going at 14 and stayed home alone, went on a trip with just my dad at 15 or 16, and then I went on one with them at 24 with ds, and a bit later with both dc at 28. I won't holiday with them again I don't think I found it a nightmare but they'd be welcome to take dc.

Wh0leCl0ves · 06/01/2020 06:15

We went to the US for a month last year when the dc were 15 and 14.They loved it. I suspect they’d want to come with us at any age to the US if it was free.Grin

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 06/01/2020 06:38

Our DC are in their thirties now and we still regularly holiday with them and their families. There were a couple of years around the ages of 19/20 when they did their own thing but usually at least one of them suggests doing something together.

Trewser · 06/01/2020 06:48

My oldest dd is 20 and still looking forward to coming to france with us this summer. Other dcs are 17 and 13. Only the 13 year old gets bored sometimes.

moomoogalicious · 06/01/2020 06:55

Dd is 17 and has chosen not to come with us this year. She is autistic and is hard work on holiday so I'm relieved to have a break to be honest!

Cheeseboardcriminal · 06/01/2020 09:07

This is quite encouraging. I had mentioned staying at a haven or centerparks type thing this year and he asked could he stay home instead.

I have been swinging back and forth about this, I love a holiday on the sun myelf but I think just go for it the bathroom will still be there next year.

OP posts:
caperplips · 06/01/2020 10:15

Dd is 14 and definitely still interested in coming on holidays with us!
I have a significant birthday coming up and we're going on a city break to celebrate, I asked dd if she would rather stay with grandparents and there was no way she wanted to stay at home -so she is coming and I'm glad as I know there will be few enough years left when she will want to.

We're also planning a trip during the summer and she will come on that too. We love holidays and travelling and I hope she comes on many more trips with us. She has been very lucky to be able to travel extensively so far and has seen a lot of the world.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 06/01/2020 11:24

I actually think DD will be the first to ditch me. She is 12 but far more sociable than DS. I can well imagine her favouring girly holidays with her friends when she hits late teens.

I always think how much I crave holidays without children badgering to stay in the waterpark everyday and me having to drag them out for some culture but I will miss it really!

OP posts:
dimsum123 · 06/01/2020 14:24

We enjoy spending family time but DD is so independent and has a ridiculous number of friends and a very active social life. She is not keen on family holidays because she doesn't want to miss out on friends' parties and social events. I think she'll come with us until 18 and after that it might only be the occasional trip.
