China town - recommendations?!

nameymcnamechangeagain · 05/01/2020 19:51

DP is obsessed with going into the city and wanting to eat in china town, I wouldn’t be surprised if most of it was rubbish and there are better alternatives but that’s what he wants to do!!!! However, I’d like to pick the best from a potentially bad bunch (and happy to be corrected if I’m wrong on this!!!)

Can anyone recommend a tried and tested place to eat?!

Won Kei is an institution but probably not the best food. I like it though. I’m sure someone will know places with higher level cuisine!

Is this China Town in London.

Peterspotter · 05/01/2020 19:57

Manchester or London?

I love the Won Kei, it's fun, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

healthylifestylee · 05/01/2020 20:00

Never eaten a meal there but been to fantastic bakery's there, amazing tea shops and lovely food shops. Always happy to walk around China town and always enjoy the things I try there.
May I suggest a little less negativity OP?

Bao Zii Inn in little newport street or newport court is amazing.

nameymcnamechangeagain · 05/01/2020 20:06

London!!!

@healthylifestylee honestly I think I was trying to preempt the negativity I thought I was going to get from the post 😂 I’m not really sure why I did that or why I cared!!!

Bap zii Inn definitely.

SisterAgatha · 05/01/2020 20:07

Canton is meant to be still quite good.

SisterAgatha · 05/01/2020 20:09

And Mr Wu is the big one you’ll see on Shaftesbury Ave, every Londoner has been there at some point in their youthful folly. Don’t make the same mistake!

China town at night has the most amazing atmosphere, it was my favourite part of London. The smell is amazing, didn't eat there though as there were queues for practically every place.

Zhx3 · 05/01/2020 20:28

Misato on Wardour Street serves big, cheap, tasty Japanese food. I usually go at least once if I'm visiting London.

Joy King Lau is one of my favourites for dim sum or dinner.

We live Wong Kei, I've been going there since I was a teenager. My favourite thing to have there is the sea spicy aubergine. May I ask why you assume China Town restaurants would be rubbish? That's a pretty sweeping statement and I'd actually be more inclined to assume that Chinese restaurants would be generally worse in a town where there was no competition rather than in China Town. Also you sound a bit sneery that your husband wants to eat there which is a bit mean!

fastliving · 05/01/2020 20:34

I am really craving a Chinese now!

ConstanceL · 05/01/2020 20:41

*love

nameymcnamechangeagain · 05/01/2020 20:54

@ConstanceL I’m really not sneery that he wants to eat there!!! Just don’t know why he’s got a bee in his bonnet about it as pretty random for him.

I just assumed because there are so many that it was 10 to a dozen type thing if I’m honest and aimed as a tourist attraction - I did say I was happy to be corrected, it was nothing but a random assumption based on nothing, I’m human, I make human errors...

I had a gorgeous meal in one called Plum Street and the flowering tea was served in a huge wine glass. It was gorgeous.

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 05/01/2020 20:58

Sorry it was Plum Valley.

MaggieFS · 05/01/2020 21:00

Friends from overseas selected somewhere to eat in Chainatown recently and I was similarly dreading it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the food was excellent and not at all expensive. Viet Food on Wardour st.

ChanChanChan · 05/01/2020 21:03

Joy King Lau is where we always go for dinner, when in Chinatown. Have never had a dud meal there.
