Candles- a cautionary tale.

I have a couple of candles left over from Christmas, I attempted to light them both last night. One caught properly and the other wick didn’t catch properly and went out (I checked it, several times)
Blew the lit candle out at bedtime and checked the other one, which was out, no smouldering etc. Got up this morning to the smell of burning candle in our landing, didn’t think too much of it but DH checked downstairs to find the candle that I’d tried to light but couldn’t burning away.
The flame has scorched the jar and the candle has burnt down a considerable amount, luckily there was nothing around it that is flammable.
Gues the moral of the story is to check and double check (as I did). No idea why, or how it was burning. Nobody else got up and lit it and we all know not to leave candles burning unattended.
Safe to say, all candles are now in the bin as we think about what could have happened.

You were lucky there, OP. I would never have a candle in the house, only on birthday cake and even then they're doused in water afterwards, as are the matches used to light them.
