What is the best nursery furniture?

Hey,

I am currently struggling with the decision of what the best nursery furniture is to go for.

My mind has been bogged down with the type of wood used and even paint that can be used. Before being pregnant I had no idea there was such a difference in it all.

Currently needing a really good deal on a cot bed and matching changing unit.

Has anyone got any suggestions. I am looking something that will work well in a boys room which has been decorated in a light grey.

Why are you wanting to spend lots of £££ on something that is only going to be used for probably up to 2 years?

Unless you have a back problem, then it would be safer to use a changing mat on the floor as the baby is likely to be trying to roll off a changing table by 4-6 months.

I personally would save the money and buy a really nice single bed when the child is old enough and other needed furniture.

Boori

I actually used the cot as a last minute changing station (c section with little notice). Was planning to use mat on floor like the others, but couldn't bend that way for a while. Baby slept in baby box, co sleeper crib and arms for the first few months anyway. He still wont sleep in the damm cot at 11 months lol...

Thanks for the replies so far.

Just to clarify I have not said I was wanting to spend lots of money I was asking for suggestions on which is good furniture eg brand and if there were any good deals.

Thanks to the suggestion of Boori I have had a look at this and looks really nice!

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks

We bought a very neutral, plain wood wardrobe, chest of drawers (with detachable changing table top) and a cot/toddler bed from mamas and papas and have been really pleased with it. www.mamasandpapas.com/en-gb/lawson-3-piece-cot-bed-range-with-dresser-and-wardrobe-natural-white/p/ralwc6002 Though it was a nightmare to put together! We had to furnish the room from scratch as had previously been a home office. The wardrobe and drawers will easily last size and style wise until LO is well into childhood and are neutral enough to match any bed when he’s older.

Have you thought about getting second hand? There's some brilliant bargains for those kind of things on Facebook marketplace, you might not get completely matching, but you could always paint to match.

Would probably save a good few hundred £ too.
(Obviously goes without saying to buy a new mattress)

We didn't buy our dc wardrobes til they started school. Prior to that everything went into a big chest of drawers. The change mat went on top of the drawers. We got a cot bed so it lasted to 5yo with the sides off.

I didn’t get nursery furniture as such, I got the STUVA system from Ikea.

It’s amazing. Really solid and you can pick and choose how much furniture for the size of the room. I got the tall drawers, toy box and wardrobe. Then when dd is older I can swap the toy box for the desk etc.

Multifunction stuff is great, because once baby is out of nappies what are you going to use a changing table for? I just changed dd on my bed or the floor, I was never going to keep schelpping upstairs or getting her out of bed to change her.

Ikea.

We just got a cot and a chest of drawers. No need for a wardrobe. We got a chair second hand and already had storage box for bedding and nappies.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/01/2020 14:10

We got our cot bed from John Lewis it’s still going strong 8 years and 3 children later. The other furniture is from ikea i think.

You need a cot bed, a big chest of drawers (we used a cheap one with two small drawers at the top and several big drawers beneath from Argos which proved to be exactly the right size) and a comfy chair for you to sit in holding the baby. That is it, to start with. Later add a bookcase and some kind of toy storage. You don't need a wardrobe until they get into school uniform, at which point you need to switch to a single bed and add a desk too.

We got ours from Mamas & Papas and I've been really pleased with it. Everyone has different ideas of what you need, I had a detachable changing unit thing on top of my chest of drawers and was glad I had it because of pain bending down after giving birth. I also liked my wardrobe and had everything in size sections but I am a bit OCD about organising 😂
We have a cot bed & bought a really good mattress for it which DD is still using at 2, and will be using for a good few years yet I think.

IKEA is fab as is practical, hwardweating and you won’t be devastated when your toddler bashes/chews/scratches it.

For us, Kallax units were WAY more useful than a wardrobe or drawers for baby clothes, nappies, creams etc. A cot top changer saves your back but you won’t need a separate changing unit.
