Low cost airline with wheelchair

Has anyone travelled on easy jet or similar with a wheelchair? I'm planning our family holiday and the best timed flights are coming up as low cost airlines but slightly worried about taking a wheelchair with us? I'm guessing we'll have to pay extra to stow it? Probably have to pay to have checked on luggage as well.

I have with Easyjet. From memory, though, I didn't have to pay to check it in because it's their rules that say this has to happen. They were wonderfully helpful too (on board).

On those sorts of carriers, you do have to pay for checked in luggage, which means sometimes you're better off going with a different company if your only criteria is cost.

Convenience of flights and cost I guess as a trade off. We are thinking of a week in the algarve but this is the first time travelling with ds needing to take a wheelchair and needing consideration for his needs. Dh is worried about taking him anywhere so I'm hoping to find out every thing I can. Our last few holidays have been car based (UK or France) but I'm sure we can do this.

My friend has two children with disabilities, she just books special assistance when she books her flights.
They get taken to through the airport on a buggy and board directly on a special lift. AFAIK she doesn't get charged for wheelchairs on either Ryanair or Easyjet

We flew with Easyjet last year when dd was in a wheelchair following an operation. They were brilliant. We didn't pay extra for the wheelchair, boarded first and everything went very smoothly. Just make sure that you contact special assistance before you fly.

You don't pay extra, and if you need to take extra medical things with you you can have an extra bag for free as long as you have a drs letter covering the items in the bag and you've called easyJet to advise.

Thank you for the advice, I'm thinking flight to faro, hire a car and book an apartment in a hotel should all be doable. Would be so nice to get some sun

I must admit I have never risked it, I don’t trust them to be honest. I flew BA to Chicago in October, they are usually reliable.
I did have good flights with Tui in March, are they classed as low cost, like Ryan air and easyJet?

LollipopViolet · 04/01/2020 13:22

Easyjet were fab when I used them. A bit different as I'm visually impaired but I do remember reading they don't charge for mobility aids like wheelchairs. I don't think any airlines do.

Mrsjayy · 04/01/2020 13:25

Yes easy jet were great you do need to book the chair in but it was fine

Mrsjayy · 04/01/2020 13:26

The wheelchair isn't charged as extra.

As others have said, book special assistance and they will help.

My folks fly with EasyJet a lot and have nothing but praise for them. They do have to wait a while sometimes but worth it

We flew Easy Jet and booked Special Assistance but on the day, they forgot to come and get us, despite frequent reminders. Boarding was well underway and we were still say on our own, then a staff member appeared and asked if my daughter could walk to the plane. (She couldn't). It ended up with me folding the wheelchair and bumping it down 2 flights of stairs while my husband carried my teenager down. We also had a toddler and a buggy. We arrived in board to find there were only single seats left, all over the place, despite us having been allocated seating together. The staff on board were fab though and moved everyone around so that we say together. Our flight home from Spain was 100% better. We haven't used Easy Jet again but have had a variety of experiences with other airlines. As my husband says "it's always an adventure" 😉
