Recovery time after sepsis?

Does anyone know how long full recovery takes? I had (thankfully mild) sepsis about 2 months ago and had a month off work, then 2 weeks half-time, and I've just had 2 weeks pre-booked annual leave.
I went back yesterday for my first full day and I'm exhausted now and can't get up. Is this normal?

I've not had sepsis but I do think after any lengthy illness, especially one that takes so much out of your body, takes a long time to recover from.

A few years back I had pneumonia and was in hospital. I was off work for 7 weeks. It took my ,OST,of,that year to,fully recover. The first weeks back I felt shocking. So,exhausted. I ended up,going to,bed very early and spent much of the weekends just recovering. In hindsight I should have had a gradual return to work.

Would a gradual return be possible in your work?

Ages. Much longer than you think. The Sepsis Trust has useful resourses for survivors about how long it takes, ongoing symptoms and going back to work.

My mum was told a year to recover. It took her about that. But she’s in her 80s and had it very badly.

Thankyou. I did have a phased return to work. I guess I thought because it was caught early so was mild (the hospital let me go home with strong antibiotics) I'd get over it quicker. I might have to see how it goes at work next week and think about asking for more time on reduced hours.
I'll look at the sepsis trust. It doesn't help that I have a 4 yr old who gets upset if I'm out of her sight since I was ill.

I had sepsis but it was during childbirth so not sure how much of the recovery was from the sepsis, the emergency c-section or from the general exhaustion of looking after a newborn.

I had it but not really severe. An overnight hospital stay and IV antibiotics.
It took several weeks (maybe 4-6) to feel back to full health.
It was exhausting.
Thanks for you.

Are you due to be working full time next week? If yes, I'd request shorter days.

Not the same but I have a chronic medical condition which absolutely floors me when it flares. Although I managed to continue to work with it, I was coming home at 5pm, eating then going to bed by 7pm and sleeping through the night 12 hours before getting up and doing it all again the next day.

Have you got plenty of support at home or are you doing all the parenting when you get home from work as well?

I had it twice- the first time nearly fatally and it took over a year to be normal again, the second time wasn't as bad and I felt like myself after about 4 months. My immune system is still a bit dicey though 11 months on.

I'm due back full time next week. DH is doing all the housework at the moment so at home I just have to look after DD while he gets everything done in the evenings.

Gosh you poor thing, that’s one of my worst fears. Are your work being supportive?

SchrodingersUnicorn · 05/01/2020 13:20

Thanks @LuckyAmy1986 work are being really supportive. The GP much less so, so I don't really want to go back for another sick note if I can help it.
