I want to try 12 new things this year

Last year was a bit blah, for various reasons. So, to change things up a bit this year, one of my new year's resolutions is to try one new thing a month. I'm limited to five hours during school days, which has ruled out a six hour wet felt bowl making course I wanted to go on, as well as learning to throw an axe (which I was seriously tempted by) once you add in travel time. But I'm sure there are loads of other things out there I could do.

So far my list has -

visit the Mary Rose museum - local-ish to me and when I went (eons ago) I saw the Victory and the Warrior but the Mary Rose museum was being revamped, and I think it's about time I made the effort to finish the set

a massage - not new as such, just new to the post children me, so I think that counts (my children are both teenagers)

trying a new exercise class at my gym - a very January type goal I thought

a candle making course

… and my inspiration has dried up.

Any ideas anyone? I'd also like ideas for new things I could try at home, not cooking because we're quite adventurous with trying new meals, but other ideas would be most welcome Smile

If your children are teenagers could you not leave them for the extra hour or so the course takes?

Visit a Church, Cathedral, Mosque etc that you've never visited before?

Visit a National Trust place you've never been to?

DownWhichOfLate · 04/01/2020 10:02

Take up kayaking.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/01/2020 10:06

Try stand up paddle boarding? Lots of places you can try it on /near the south coast.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/01/2020 10:07

Learn a musical instrument? Or a language?

yellowallpaper · 04/01/2020 10:41

Learn to ice skate?

FiveStoryFire · 04/01/2020 13:38

This is brilliant:

TiffanyTrot · 04/01/2020 13:49

Learn to moon walk (teach yourself from YouTube)

Learn how to solve a Rubik's cube - get a GO Cube, it's a speed cube and you'll be shown all the steps and the pattern

Do the longest zip wire in Wales

Learn to hula hoop - I taught myself in half an hour from YouTube

sonjadog · 04/01/2020 14:03

Write a creative story from your own imagination.

Find and to for a walk that includes the highest point in your own district and those near you (depends where you live if this is possible)

Read a book in a genre that you would never normally read/ or in a language that you speak but would not normally read in.

whatwouldjohnmclanedo · 04/01/2020 14:04

Bungee jump!

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/01/2020 14:10

I'm doing something similar - I'll be 60 at the end of the year and want to branch out while there's still time!

So far on my list I have - ride a horse along a beach (I'm an experienced rider but have never ridden on a beach before!)
Go somewhere for a weekend, by myself, and discover a new city.
Learn to ride sidesaddle
Run a half marathon
Learn a new word from the dictionary or thesaurus each week (and try to use it).

Watching keenly for any more ideas to add to my list...

Savingforarainyday · 04/01/2020 14:41

@TiffanyTrot

Did the hula hoop trim your waist?
( very January question)

And, OP, maybe instead of experiences, learn new concepts...ie explore philosophy or Japanese poetry....

BikeRunSki · 04/01/2020 14:45

As your children are teenagers, are you really limited to school hours only?

AdaColeman · 04/01/2020 14:55

Learn to swim if you can't already, or learn to dive, or swim a mile.

MommaShell69 · 04/01/2020 16:13

Volunteer at a charity shop or host a coffee morning for charity.

BikeRunSki · 04/01/2020 16:15

Go to a country you’ve never been to. I’d recommend NI for the Giant’s Causeway and Namibia for the dessert dunes.

Learn a new language

morejumpingfrogs · 04/01/2020 16:36

Thank you for all your suggestions. I am limited to school hours unfortunately as ds2 has quite severe SN and can't be left to his own devices (well, not if we want the house still standing Grin)

I like the ideas one - philosophy tickles my fancy - because I could do that one at home. Also latin (Japanese seems a step too complicated for me), I think the app my son uses for French at school has a latin option - must ask him.

Kayaking sounds cool too - but you could never ever pay me enough to bungee jump Envy

I would also like to find a Hindu temple to visit, that is definitely going on my list.

Take an alpaca for a walk, it's such fun!

ElloBrian · 04/01/2020 17:05

Oh this is a lovely idea! Watching with interest. Last year I promised myself I was going to have a massage once a month but I only got as far as March before it petered out !! Maybe I should try again.

Floralnomad · 04/01/2020 17:05

Ride a camel
Horse riding

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/01/2020 17:18

I started Latin on the Duolingo app a fee months ago, really enjoying it.

AdaColeman · 04/01/2020 17:18

See what’s offered by your local zoo, hold a tarantula, paddle with a giant ray, get close to a bird of prey for example.

RuthW · 04/01/2020 17:23

A WI that suits your needs but not necessarily your nearest one as they are all very different.

If you are into sports, find a sporty one, or a craft one or whatever you are into.

AdaColeman · 04/01/2020 17:23

Make homemade wines/liqueurs, elderflower champagne, damson gin, bramble whisky etc.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 04/01/2020 17:27

Ooohhhh I love this idea!
I am going to get fighting fit and perfect one of my languages.
Still need another 10 challenges, so reading with interest.
