Returning clothes that smell like smoke?

It's never going to happen is it?

My son received some really nice clothes from a relative from M&S but he's a teen and it's not his style.
We were given the gift receipt but the relative is a smoker and the clothes smell of smoke.

Has anyone tried returning clothes that smell of smoke?

I know I wouldn't buy clothes off the rack that smelled of smoke so I'm guessing they won't take them.

How bad a smell is it? Could it be hung outside for a few hours?

Hung yes, that's a good idea.

It's proper cigarette smoke, which i feel like is worse than rollies.
My DH smokes rollies and his stuff never smells this strong.

I will try hanging it outside thank you.

Put them on a hanger on the line for a few hours.
Marks have seemingly been stricter about exchanges so if they still have a whiff febreeze a bit.

I wouldn't use febreeze! Just hang the clothes outside in the fresh air for a while.
