Admitted to Hospital with breech baby?

Just wondered if anyone has been admitted straight to hospital with a breech baby?

I’m 37 + 2 today and I went in with reduced movements to be monitored. As it’s not my first time noting RFM I had to speak to a consultant, who wanted to scan me. She was lovely but basically said oh, we actually have a completely different problem to deal with, baby is footling breech!

I assumed my options would be to make an appointment for the ECV she was talking about and see if it works, but she wanted to admit me right away so I am now lying in a hospital ward even though nobody is going to attempt to move the baby until the morning..

Has anyone got any stories they can share about experiences with having a breech baby quite far along? I’m very nervous about them feeling the need to keep me in hospital overnight, I understand that there is an issue if my waters break but is there some sort of increased likelihood of that happening due to the baby’s position or something??

I went in to hospital for induction at 41+ with DS3. He was breech but I was encouraged to try a vaginal delivery after an attempt to turn him failed. Student midwives all trooped in to examine me. I then jumped in for a shower before going down to the delivery ward. During the shower DS swivelled. All the students returned for another feel of my belly. DS was definitely head down and was delivered that way. So, if a 9lb + baby can turn that late in the day, there's always hope. Good luck.

My niece was born vaginally as a footling breech. It hasn't been picked up before labour started.
Both my sister and niece were fine but the room was filled with staff who all wanted a look as they so rarely see breech births.

My dc3 was picked up as breech at 40+16 during examination after being induced. Bit of a surprise!
Had csection and I was a bit jittery as it was bright lights and legal talk which was very different to my 2 previous midwife led births but it was fine, lovely even.
Recovery is obviously longer. Do you have a post natal hospital near you?? If you do, I'd recommend that in a heartbeat. I stayed for 5 nights there after 2 nights in hospital which gave me time to build up to a fast walk so I could chase my toddler by the time I got home.

Good luck OP, I hope you're keeping comfortable x

I delivered my DD2 vaginally as a Frank breech delivery. It hadn't been picked up at all until I was first examined in labour, and by then I was too close to delivery to perform a c section. Apart from the obvious panic from all of the staff (and my husband), it was actually pretty straightforward! Good luck with your delivery.

Thank you all :)

Its great to be able to read all your replies while I’m here as I can’t really switch off, but at least I am comfy and the ward is nice and quiet!

I’m hoping the ECV is uncomplicated and I think I will let them lightly attempt it if that makes sense - if it feels like they are really having to dig at the baby I will decline continuing.

The little ones feet looked very far down on the scan and I have read that while they can do breech births, they are not recommended for footling breech babies :(

Two of my babies were breech and I had ecs for both. The main concern was chord prolapse for both . I had a great birth with both and recovered well . Good luck .💐

At my 38wk appointment DS2 was discovered to be breech despite always being head down previously. I was sent to hospital for them to double check with a scan etc, position was checked on ward then scan & breech position was confirmed.
Sent back up to the ward to see consultant as they were pushing ECV but I was not keen. Consultant decided to have a feel & declared DS2 was head down not breech! Portable scanner brought in & he was head down - little sod had turned in 20 mins without me noticing!
The worry was then that he was an unstable lie & I could go into labour with him in any position so I was told to come in as soon as contractions began, which they did at 4am the following morning he was obviously fed up of being prodded.
Good luck OP, you're in the best place and I think baby still has time to turn.

I don’t think you can really ask them to stop mid-ecv. Well, you can but it wouldn’t really work. I think you need to be concentrating more on getting the baby here safely (if c section needed) rather than concentrating on avoiding c section at any cost.

CloudyVanilla · 03/01/2020 09:22

I’m definitely not planning on avoiding c section at any cost now, I was nervous at first but priority one is healthy baby.

I apparently absolutely can ask them to discontinue if I want to and the consultant will also discontinue if they don’t feel it is going well or if they feel that it might be putting baby in distress.

I got this from my midwife but I’m yet to see a consultant- first port of call will be a detailed scan to see his position again and try and identify any risk factors that would put them off doing it.

I’m sad about that because apparently one reason they may not even try is if there is too little or a lot of amniotic fluid. With my son I had a bit of polyhydramnios and a my last growth scan while it didn’t meet the criteria for poly again, she did describe the fluid as “generous” Confused

So I might not even get a chance to turn this little one by ECV.

@FlurkenSchnit that’s amazing! I can’t believe how much they can move at this stage without you even realise!

I thought it was a juicy little bum I was rubbing under my rib cage, turns out it is his head Grin

All 3 of my babes went two weeks overdue and were breech. I had 3 very late ECVs and all was well on each occasion. I did not experience pain with the procedures.

I hope that your little one is born soon and you can put these worries behind you - thank goodness for modern medicine.

Good luck! Smile

CloudyVanilla · 03/01/2020 15:34

Thanks again for all the positive experiences!

Unfortunately today has been a long day as there have been lots of emergencies.

The scan wasn’t great news either, he is actually not footling breech but is in fact lying transverse with feet presenting right low down.

I’m waiting to speak to the consultant still who is in theatre, but the midwife did pre warn me that they may want to keep me in due to the risk of water breaking and no option of vaginal birth will be available if he doesn’t turn :(
