Because we are away for more than half the week..a drawer and cupboard declutter and thorough house bottoming has not happened this year.

I’m not a clean freak, far from it but I do like neat and tidy and when things are falling out of cupboards it’s time to make a stand.

Last thorough declutter was 2.5 years ago for a rewire.

Soo, I’m breaking t down into bite sized chunks..a drawer or a cupboard at a time.
Today I tackled a drawer full of paperwork, bank statements etc. I don’t like to chuck them away in case there’s a problem..so I sorted that one today.

Anyone else?

I will! I've been on a decluttering mission this week. I started with the main toy storage in our living room (to fit the new toys), and have done the toy storage in the dc's room, their books and clothes and our bedroom.

I need to go through my clothes and look at the garage again when I have a chance, as well as some small DIY jobs (oil the kitchen worktop and put up some hooks).

My mission to fight and tomorrow is to declutter my Christmas storage boxes before they go back into the loft.

Glenthebattleostrich · 02/01/2020 20:33

Yes please!

I've just ordered a new notebook to organise myself and a big declutter is part of that.

Tomorrow I'm bagging up lots of old clothes to take to the charity shop on Saturday morning.

Justabadwife · 02/01/2020 20:39

I'm in.
I did my bedroom the other day. Got rid of 2 bun bags of rubbish and 1 bag to take to the cloths bank (after taking 3 bin bags about 2 weeks ago)
I also did a drawer in the kitchen because I couldn't find something, and made a 'drug drawer' with all the meds, paracetamol, ibuprofen, creams and apparently coffee?

My aim is to fill a bin bag of unwanted things a week - maybe paperwork, books I've read, DP has to keep the box for every electronic item we've ever bought, so they can start to go.
It will either go in the bin, recycling or charity shop. I haven't got anything worth selling 🤔

Northernsoullover · 02/01/2020 20:42

I've taken 15 bags to the charity shop today Grin. I also did a tip run. I've still got a long way to go so I'm happy to join in.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/01/2020 22:50

I've admitted defeat for tonight with my declutter of my Christmas decorations and will finish tomorrow. However lovely dp has done a deep clean of the kitchen so I'm not feeling totally deflated.

Dowser · 04/01/2020 12:59

Wow northern soul lover
15 bags full...I’m well impressed
Yesterday’s declutter got side lined when we went to see Star Wars
But as penance. While watching prison break I did manage two drawers

Only got a measly half bag out of them..but some stuff that had migrated from other rooms got put back in their rightful place

Haven’t found any money yet ☹️
I have those drawer dividers, which are brilliant
I occasionally stuff a tenner or two between them..nothing found so far ...so I’d better start digging deeper

I counted up ....in the bedroom alone I have 25 drawers of various sizes..from small holding aromatherapy oils to big holding undies etc
I have done 4 so far

In the same room..I have floor to ceiling wardrobes..that are about 12 by 8 feet..not even started on
Plus a two feet by 6 feet storage unit..again not touched
Then a 6 foot high Ikea cd unit...it’s going to take me months..just to get out of the bedroom at this rate.

Better get digging
My 6 feet tall grandson is coming shortly to get the stuff down that’s really high up for me..that should help

I'm following the Declutter 365 calendar - 15 minutes a day throughout the entire year. I'll probably do bigger chunks in spring when the weather improves and my impulse to clean kicks in again!

latedecember1963 · 04/01/2020 17:21

I'm going to join you. I made a start 2 years ago and did quite well but lost impetus and stuff is piling up again. We'll be needing elastic walls soon.
Today I've packed away the Christmas decorations and thrown away a couple that had seen better days.
2 years ago when I was umming and ahing over whether to throw away a tatty old decoration DS2 looked at it and jokingly asked me whether or not I thought he or his brother would want it in the event of my death. Sounds brutal but he's right and it does help me be more decisive. 😁

Roselilly36 · 04/01/2020 17:30

Yes please, we are looking to downsize, we have a big house, been here 16 years, so the clutter has built up. I have made a start, but progress is slow 😂 got to do it though.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 04/01/2020 17:32

I'm in! Two bags of clothes went to the charity shop on Tuesday, there's another big bagful waiting in the hall. I spent this morning going through all my winter clothes and ruthlessly bagging up any that don't fit - I'm being realistic that I can no longer squeeze into them and keeping them just makes me feel miserable. I am slowly losing weight but medication is making it very slow ☹️
I have already sorted the small bedroom and condensed everything into the middle bedroom so I can have a room for all my craft bits and bobs. Very happy bunny!

Dowser · 04/01/2020 17:46

Well there’s been a bit more movement today
Top shelf of the 12 feet long wardrobe and top shelf of the 8 feet long one netted one pair of boots, two pairs of child’s wellies, an old tape/ radio player..still working, a Christmas tray, some black and white place mats, a bag of ps 360 games, some Lego, a bag crafty stuff, fake snow ..cotton wool type stuff, a few dvds that I think dh clawed back

Could’ve been better..too much reminiscing over old photos, my dads stamp collection and as my son called round, his big boy jeans that he wore at 18 months ...every time I said, you’ve got your big boy jeans on, tell mummy when you want a wee...10 minutes later there’d be a big wet patch down the front of him.

Just because he was articulate and a good talker..didn’t mean he was ready to be potty trained.. Lol..there were baby clothes and baby shoes..and all went back in the wardrobe.

I’m not very ruthless...big sigh

Dowser · 04/01/2020 17:48

Me and dh rattle around in a 4 bed bungalow..it looks quite tidy as ive loads of storage...but the cupboards are jam packed
I like this 15 minutes a day idea.

I’m knackered and barely scratched the surface

I'm in! I'm moving house in (hopefully) a couple of weeks and am going from four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a utility to two beds, one bathroom and a converted loft. I am, however, in the fortunate position of being on my own, so I'm just throwing EVERYTHING away,

Dowser · 05/01/2020 22:22

Nothing to report today... Christmas panto , so wasn’t going to start before we went.

Another grandson has offered a pair of hands. So that’s good
They know nana pays well ..and we can do some bonding over the bric a brac 👍

latedecember1963 · 06/01/2020 11:42

I've used up a shower gel and a hair conditioner this morning. I've got others to use up so I won't buy any more.
I'm aiming to use up or get rid of at least 1 item per day throughout January. I have also avoided the sales so I don't bring more in than I get rid of.
How's everyone else getting on?

Poppet1710 · 06/01/2020 12:13

I’m in. We moved last month. Couldn’t do the clear out before we moved as juggling a newborn baby. Now aiming to do a box a day of unpacking and declutter a lot of it at the same time as I unpack. Today I did the bathroom stuff. Managed to get rid of empty bottles that DH hoards.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/01/2020 14:09

I'm trying to do just one thing every day. So today I went round my bookcases and boxed up the books I don't want to take with me to go to the charity shop. Yesterday I cleared out two kitchen cupboards (and threw away most of the contents). My hands still smell of mould. I've also emptied out the airing cupboard of twenty years of duvet covers and towels - am only keeping a very few.

The local charity shops are going to groan when they see me coming!

Dowser · 07/01/2020 09:23

Animal shelters will take the duvets zaphod.
Well I made up for Sunday last night.
I did 5 drawers last night while watching prison break.
I have the 8 drawer Ikea hemnes chest and did three big ones and two top ones. A pile of half used toiletries went in the bin. Undies drawer was seriously paired down. We have a walk in closet in the room next door..I put the small pairs of pants in there. If I ever get to to doing that room( it has Wall to ceiling ikea basket storage on two walls, 11 feet six but 7 feet) nightmare.
I sent a load of good bras , about 25 ,to that charity place in Edinburgh that sends them to women in Africa.
Something about if women over there are poor, don’t wear underwear they are seen as fair game by local men.

I obviously haven’t missed them

Part of me wishes I hadn’t started ...all of it was tucked away behind wardrobe and cupboard doors, but was it
. Little piles were starting to build up at the sides of cupboards..so I’ve only been kidding myself.

Now, I’ve started, there just seems like mountains to climb.
Once it’s gone out of the house, it’s amazing how you don’t even miss it.

I’m not very ruthless.

OP posts:
Dowser · 07/01/2020 09:26

The bras were sent about this time last year.
I must’ve sent the 38ds, cos I found 38dd and 40Ds last night
I need to lose weight also

I worked till 11 pm last night from about 7...so a good way to spend an evening

OP posts:
Zaphodsotherhead · 07/01/2020 09:33

It's just the covers, Dowser and they are all mouldy because of the damp in the airing cupboard (! Yes, I can't wait to move!).

You've been very productive - and reminded me that, although I've mostly cleared out my bedroom, there are some drawers in a vanity unit I need to sort today.

Namethecat · 07/01/2020 09:33

Old towels ?
Please don't throw them away . A lot of supermarkets have a bin near the tills for pet food donations for your local animal charity .
They are always on the look out for towels, you can put them in there obviously not to the brim
If not charity shops often take them to sell cheap for dog towels.

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/01/2020 09:35

That's a good idea Name, but I am very rural and never anywhere near large supermarkets. However, I will ask the vet if they need any. They are mostly too tatty to be of much use, but anything with any pile left on it (yes, I've been hoarding worn out towels, what was I THINKING!) can go to them if they will take them.

I've also got a dog, so I'm keeping anything that will be usable for her.

Dowser · 07/01/2020 10:18

Talking about mould..I’m putting all my declutterEd items into a pile for the charity shop and looked at the ceiling and spotted the signs of water ingress.
I need to ring the roofer...again
House is only 45 years old...and how many repairs have I had done to the roof......
This house has been extended twice..always had a problem
Argh
And breathe

OP posts:
latedecember1963 · 07/01/2020 10:18

Very impressive, Dowser.
Not obvious clutter, but I've just deleted about about 40 emails from my inbox.
I haven't had a call asking me to work today so I'm doing laundry this morning before sorting through a pile of old magazines this afternoon. It's our card/paper bin collection tomorrow so a good incentive to do that.

Poppet1710 · 07/01/2020 10:22

I’m going to do the baby’s chest of drawers today. He has grown out of all his newborn and 0-3 month stuff despite being 2 months. Planning on storing it in case dare I say it we have a second. Anyone got any tips for storing clothes so they don’t get moth eaten?
