Hi @Titie
What is an ABA therapist?

Titie · 02/01/2020 21:08

Hello @Breathmiller

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It's normally used for children with speech delays or children that are on the Autism spectrum.

Have you done your research on this type of intervention? Its fairly controversial and reading blogs by now adults who went through it is interesting.

Hi OP, have you read this? Obviously you only want the best for your child but you may not be aware of the darker side of ABA therapy and the PTSD many autistic adults have from experiencing it.

@ravensoopaonarope That's an interesting article and it's great that the author obviously grew into a wonderfully eloquent, considerate and expressive adult. Maybe the ABA treatment or what she considers to be "abuse" she received as a child had nothing to do with it OR maybe it had everything to do with it. It is hard to tell without a significant amount of context.

However, as a loving and concerned parent, given a choice between what "many families hail as the most effective, most scientifically proven way to help [thier] autistic children develop life skills such as speech, potty training, etc" and doing nothing but understanding your child's needs (as no alternative interventions were suggested in the article), then there is not much of a choice.

@oej2020 it's a shame the article didn't suggest any alternatives!
There are some excellent facebook groups where parents can get advice from autistic adults on how to help their children.

I think it's incredibly difficult for parents when only one approach is offered, which is currently ABA.

Hi @ravensoaponarope, can you please share any of these Facebook groups. Would be very helpful to hear from autistic adults.
