Aldi switch and save a load of crap?

I'm based in Ireland so figures may be different...

I've been thinking about these ads for a while and wondering if anyone has switched and has a comparable story.

An Aldi ad a while back with an elderly couple claiming to have saved more per week than I spend feeding 3 people by simply switching to Aldi. I can't remember the exact amount and the ad is no longer shown.

Just seen another ad tonight with a couple from Cavan with two small boys claiming to have saved €482 over 4 weeks by switching to Aldi.

I do my weekly shop in Tesco and spend roughly €120-140 a week feeding myself, Dh and dd who is 5. I can't get my head around how they are managing these savings. Surely these figures are bullshit. I would imagine an extra 30-40 a week max for the extra kid... so the ad seems to suggest they feed 4 people from Aldi on €40-€60 a week.

Unless you are only eating cheap pasta and sauce this seems like bullshit to me.

You can definitely get a lot for your money from Aldi. Some of it tastes nice - some of it you can taste the cheapness . I can never do a full week shop at Aldi . Their range is very limited . I always end up having to go somewhere else as well , but I suppose that still saves me money . I often can’t be arsed to go to two places though .

Didn’t a family have to leave Ireland because of these ads? They targeted and threatened because they were mixed race couple? What a lovely place!

Back to op - yes you can eat well and cheap - just don’t question the origins of your food!

I buy meat from the butcher (for DH and the dc, I'm vegetarian) and fruit and veg I grow or buy from the local market. Everything else comes from Aldi and it is significantly cheaper than other local options.

I have however, recently experienced the difference between stores. My parents use Lidl and their store is great but on holiday in Devon, we used a Lidl and it was appalling. Fresh food was already questionable and the shelves were poorly stocked, the store filthy. Locals confirmed that it was always that way. I was quite surprised at the marked difference.

I don’t find the veg from Lidl goes off fast...but then again I shop weekly.

I shop twice a week and Lidl still goes off faster than I can use them.

Another thing I notice with Lidl (there are three nearby), they are FULL of processed food. So many biscuits and sweets etc. Tesco has too but to me it is more noticeable as the Lidl stores are small and the quantity of rubbish is more obvious.

I did aldi the weekend. Mainly meal stuff and lunchbox items.. No treats loads of veg and fruit. £36 for 4 of us. I don't buy the value range.
Inc in that was 2 packs chicken fillets
Saugaes, bacon fish, baby wipes loo roll and bits. Yet still cheaper.
I did tesco for a small. Similar shop before Xmas and was £87

Tesco is 2 mins drive from my House. Aldi 20min drive.. But I really need to start going back to aldi..

I don't really find it any cheaper as I buy a lot of supermarket own brand stuff already.
