Would you get a car if you were me?

I currently don't have a car.
I can drive but hate it so so so much and my DH hates driving too.
Our last car was written off after being rear ended and it was a bit of a relief to get rid tbh.

We live in a city with good transport links and neither of us need a car for work.

We enjoy getting the train and have been putting the money we were spending on a car into a separate account and using it for taxis to more difficult places.
We also rent out our drive and make about £50 a month from that.

We've really enjoyed not having a car but recently I've been worrying that we'll need one in the future when our parents need looking after more, it means we can pull more of the family admin weight and just contribute more. There's not an issue at the moment as all parents are fit and healthy but I wonder if I leave it until there's an issue will it be more difficult to drive the longer I leave it. DH is an only child so I imagine having to do a lot in the future.

We could afford a car but obviously they are expensive and it's nice having the extra money in our pockets.

I just feel like I'm not a proper grown up without one.

I think if you're happy without don't bother.

However if you decide to get one it might be worth doing some driving lessons to build your confidence up (for both of you)

Personally, I would hate to be without a car.
It would limit / would have limited my life SO much
but
If you are happy without one, then do what makes you happy.
Worry about what 'might be' when (if) it comes.

If you have 'forgotten' how to drive, you could always have a few referesher lessons with a driving instructor then.

I wouldn’t consider your future car needs now. If you need one in the future then so be it. You’ll easily find a friendly driving instructor able to give you some refresher lessons. But if you’re really worried about losing the skills try hiring one every now and again.

Kittykatmacbill · 01/01/2020 22:32

Nope. Hire a car / use a taxi when you need it.

Expressedways · 01/01/2020 22:37

No. If there comes a point when you do need a car e.g. if your parents need looking after then buy one then and take refresher lessons if you’re worried about being rusty. In the meantime save the money/hassle and if you need one for the odd journey then rent.

CormoranStrike · 01/01/2020 22:44

No need to buy one now as a what if.

Buy one when you need it and book a couple of 3 driving lessons each then.

What about the loss of your no claims bonus etc?

Don’t you lose that after two years without insurance?
