Partner moving in.

Evening.
Any advice on financial contribution when your partner moves in?
I have a mortgage and he is moving in with me in March.
He is not selling up to move in with me. He sold a couple of years ago and is/was renting when we met anyway.
He is happy to share 50/50 but I'm thinking j should pay my mortgage 100% myself and we share everything else and contribute to a savings account.
How has anyone else worked it out please?
Thankyou.

See a solicitor to protect your house so he can't later claim on it if you get married.

Have him pay half of everything including mortgage and bills; put what you’re saving through this in your own savings account not linked to him. In a couple of years look at it again; it’s only if you do it for a long time that it could have implications for your mortgage and even then it’s hard for someone to claim that they’re owed anything.
I lived with my DH (back then a DP) in his flat and paid half towards everything; we knew that within 2-3 years we’d either buy together or i’d formally buy half his flat

Do not let him pay towards your mortgage or maintenance costs. I'd let him pay the bills up to the value of the mortgage payment and share everything else 50/50.

You mean I pay the mortgage completely but accept an equal amount in bill payments ?...

Yes, exactly that.

Read this which explains why.

It's something that sticks in my head from law school (I don't practise land / property). It's useful info to have!

I’d ask for half of all bills bar the mortgage and ask him to save his “half”of that payment so that if things went well you could buy together and if not he has the means to move out and rent so has some security.

When I moved into DPs home that he owned, I paid for all the bills and he paid the mortgage

I moved into my now DH house as it he built it. I paid nothing towards the mortgage (I didn't wasn't to be paying for his investment and he didn't want me to claim to have a stake) and half of all bills. We opened a joint account for food and household consumables only e.g We needed a new ironing board/loo seat/kettle. After a year I paid for a new bathroom. I saved the equivalent of the mortgage payments each month. I still have them. It's taken 4 years but I'm happy now with how we organise it. We both want to retire at 60 and be mortgage free at some point we will pay this off

You can claim a stake even if you aren't paying the mortgage in certain circumstances.
