Yoga with Adriene - worth it?

So I've heard this name mentioned in passing a fair few times. Never tried yoga before and don't even own a mat. Had a very difficult 2019 so was just thinking of trying something a bit different to take my mind off things.

I understand there is a series of daily 30 min (?) for the month of Jan starting free on Youtube which you can do at home.

Is it worth doing, and what did you get out of it? I can pop to Argos and pick up a mat but just wondered if it was one of those hyped up YouTube things or whether it really makes a difference?

I have a gym membership so wondered if my time would be better put to use there, not that I'm short of time to be fair.

Thank you

She is amazing - totally worth it. You don’t need a mat, you can do it on a hard floor. When I follow it properly (3 times a week or so) I can see a change in muscle definition and my back doesn’t hurt. You have nothing to lose by giving it a go.

eatsleepmoverepeat · 01/01/2020 13:58

Definitely worth it. Don’t bother with a mat til you know you’re going to commit though

Do you have a link to the January challenge, please?

I love Adriene. Her 30 days of Yoga are brilliant and you will def notice a difference by the end

Wanderlustnearorfar · 01/01/2020 15:06

Is this suitable if you are a complete beginner with zero flexibility?

Fredy45 · 01/01/2020 15:14

Yes - I did her 30 days of yoga a couple of years ago when v unfit and not bendy and it was great.

I dip in and out now - I love her flow sessions and runners yoga. I do go to a class fairly regularly as well but actually prefer her.

I am toying with doing this years 30 day challenge but I struggle with time as January is our busiest month at work. May still have a crack at it.....

To be fair, I am already pretty flexible (as per PT I had a while back).

Would pilates be the better fit for me (looking to tone up) and if so is there any Adriene equivalent for pilates Grin?

It's definitely worth doing if you've never done yoga before and want to give it a go. I practise regularly and find Adrienne too chatty, I prefer more actual yoga! But she's lovely and it's a nice way to get started.

There’s a link at the top of the page. Do it, do it, do it Grin Adriene is great. The 30 days usually start slowly and build up, it’s not just flexibility, but strength and self-care. Ideal for beginners. Try it for a few days and I bet you’ll be hooked!

I tried to sign up but couldn't?

I know it's not always possible but I would really try to go to classes and supplement with a home practice. It's very easy to learn poor alignment without a yoga teacher guiding you. Definately develop a home practice once you feel comfortable with the core asanas.

My mum and sister are yoga teachers and I used to practice daily - they see lots of people injure themselves with poor alignment.

Pilates is great for core strength, muscle tone too.

Yoga has lots of strength building aswell if you do an energising practice - there are so many types so it can take some experimentation to find which you enjoy the most.

KittyMcKitty · 01/01/2020 16:14

I think it really depends on what you’re looking for. I’ve practiced yoga for 10+ years and currently do Adriene every day and a relatively advanced class 1 / 2 times a week which helps me ensure my postures etc are correct.

Yoga will stretch, tone and improve flexibility but will also potentially give you much more.

I love Adriene (I’ve not tried any other YouTube yoga) - come and join us on the thread linked above Smile

I found it too difficult and gave up.

Totally- yoga isn’t a competition it’s a personal journey and we are all at different points on that journey.

^ apologies bold fail!

ClashCityRocker · 01/01/2020 16:45

I do the yoga with adrienne videos on rotation and always feel better for doing it.

As a somewhat pudgy, rather inflexible individual I manage. She often suggests ways to modify a pose if you're less flexible. Some bits can feel a bit silly (like the lion breathing or whatever it is) but generally, I'm a fan, and have noticed improvements - I started as I getting a lot of lower back pain, and it seems to have helped that.
